The word blessed means happy. I think that the Bible is redefining the word happiness from self indulgence to meaningfullness. There are promises of Joy and if we follow God's truth about our relationships there will be less emotional pain and more meaning. Suffering produces character and character hope. Maybe we need more sermons about suffering it may lead to more meaning.

This lesson made me think of that exciting and tantalizing line at the end of the Revelation:

"The leaves of the tree are for the healing of the nations."

Somehow I don't think John meant the little political bodies that set themselves up as sovereign. As a Jewish apocalyptic writer, I believe he meant "for the healing of the goyim" or the Gentiles, all those who had suffered long outside the kingdom of God.

I'm certainly not sure of all that it means (it implies a great deal more than our traditional theology allows), but I'm quite certain it doesn't mean that Rome will be healed, and Assyria will be healed, and the USA will be healed.

in HIS love,

Jay,
Regarding the Lisbon earthquake you said "And when prosperity turned to despair, many lost their faith. They had never really been disciples after all. They just thought they had struck a good bargain with God. But God doesn’t make deals." Are you sure you're not thinking like a Calvinist? ;-)
Peace,
Randall
