It’s Friday! But this too shall pass — a Saturday morning reflection

I asked in the last post, “The Rube Goldberg contraption in the video reminds me of ____________”

There are lots of possible, really good answers, but let me suggest this one: “God.”

Really.

What was your emotional response to the video? Delight? Joy? Curiosity? A yearning to see what’s next?

If you study quantum mechanics, microbiology, the Amazonian rain forest, or cosmology — all things made by God — you experience the same reaction. It’s amazing how God has lavished so much effort on butterfly wings, paramecium cilia, and galaxies so far away we have to put a telescope in orbit just to see them. God isn’t efficient, but he doesn’t have to be. He’s infinite. Unlike us, he’s not worried about running out of time or resources.

The beauty of the video is the lavish creativity and inventiveness. Things happen just because they’re cool to watch, clever, and unexpected. There’s more there than the eye can take in. Like God’s creation.

For example, why did God create dinosaurs? Did he need to make dinosaurs so he could later create Adam and Eve? I don’t think so.

One writer answers: To produce endless delight for 3-year old little boys. Worked for me.

It could be because God found the making of dinosaurs great fun, just like dropping balloons or umbrellas from the ceiling for no reason other than the sheer fun of watching them fall and bounce around.

And for the same reason the guys who made the contraption had it filmed — for the joy of having others delight in their creativity — God created the fossilization process, so that one day, people who will live with him for eternity might ask: “Abba, why did you make dinosaurs? And, by the way, Abba, I loved playing with the little plastic monsters as a child.”

I think God is looking forward to that day.

  1. Rose Marie says:

I was walking in the Safeway store one afternoon back in the 1970's in Colorado Springs, CO with my infant son (we both are white caucasians). We saw a man with blue black skin……….a man of African origin, no doubt. I was absolutely blown away with how beautiful that skin was. And I realized how much delight God had when he created just humans in their infinite variety. I don't think my son had ever seen a black man. He was fascinated also. Praise God for his infinite creativity!

  2. Dinosaurs aren't just for boys, you know. I had my favorites as a child, as do many of the little girls I know now…and some of the grown women.
