The thank you above is a note received by our congregation (Singing Oaks Church of Christ) in Denton, TX after our recent trip out to Tuscaloosa to help with the tornado cleanup.... it is ironic that while this lady believes that she received the blessing, in reality, we are the ones that received the blessing!!!

Thank you from Tuscaloosa, Alabama
I just want to send a special thank you to the group of young people that gave up some of their summer to come to Tuscaloosa, AL to help with the clean up. On Saturday June 11, I saw one of your vans (Singing Oaks CofC) in my neighborhood. I flagged them down and asked if they might be able to help me get what was left of my tree cut down. The two men in the van assured me that when they finished with the house they were going to work on they would come by. Later that afternoon there was a knock on my door and there they were ready to cut the tree down. I was very grateful for the work they did for me. But there is more.... sunday morning (the 12th) I was just about to head out to work when there was another knock on the door. I opened the door to see a young lady at the door and 10-15 young people behind her. Also in the group was one of the men from Saturday. she asked me if it was okay if they worked in my backyard. Because I am a single, older lady, I of course said "sure". by the time I finished getting ready for work, the young people were busy pulling old fencing from my backyard. As I stepped out the young lady was asking me about some of the things that had just been thrown together while construction was being done. I told her which things I wanted to keep and what could be thrown away. They had already started a good size trash pile. When I got home from work, I went to the backyard and could not have been more pleased. They truly worked hard and made a wonderful, huge makeover to the yard. Please let the group know how thankful I am for all of their work. I have talked with one of the nurses at the hospital where I take pictures of newborns about this group. she is a member of the Central Church of Christ here in Tuscaloosa (which was destroyed by the tornado). It has been a blessing to see how many people, from many different walks of life have come together to help others in need. God's Blessings to each of the group and your church for reaching out in our time of need. Carol-Sue Nix

Les,

I'll be addressing the question as I work through the Real Restoration series. It'll take a while to get to.

In the meantime, you've put your finger in the distinction. A large of the difference between the old and new covenants is described in Heb 8:10-13, quoting from Jeremiah 31.

It's not about replacing flawed laws with better laws. It's about a grace made available through faith that produces transformed people by the power of the Spirit.

This site has been a real blessing to me Jay. I don't comment very often but I am regularly blessed by your post on a variety of subjects. When you get the chance, I'd really enjoy getting your take on the nature of the "new covenant". Exactly what is it? Are the New Testament scriptures and the new covenant one and the same thing? When the Hebrew writer quotes Jeremiah and speaks of the new covenant not being like the first covenant, how is it different? Jeremiah declared, "...This is the covenant I will make with the house of Israel after that time, declares the Lord. I will put their laws in their minds and write them on their hearts. I will be their God and they will be my people. No longer will a man teach his neighbor, or a man his brother, saying,
'Know the Lord,' because all will know me, from the least of them to the greatest. For I will forgive their wickedness and will remember their sins no more." (Hebrews 8:10-13). What is the nature of the new covenant? How is it different from the first? Should we understand the new covenant primarily as a new set of rules to live by in comparison to the old covenant? Or is that view flawed? Appreciate you insight.

Ed,

On the left, there's a link for "Marriage, Divorce, and Remarriage" (or you can click http://oneinjesus.info/index-under-construction/marriage-divorce-remarriage/) -- which is a series of posts that covers the topic thoroughly.

If you prefer, there's also an ebook "But If You Do Marry ..." covering the same material in a little more detail. http://oneinjesus.info/books-by-jay-guin/but-if-you-do-marry/

May God bless your studies.
