At last, rather than talking about sheep in pens and leading sheep through the wilderness and protecting sheep from wolves, we have a catchy modern metaphor.

    Jay, your “no mixed bathing” remark reminds me of an observation made by Bill Banowsky at Moody Coliseum, ACU, during the 1968 Lectureship. He noted:

    The prohibition against mixed bathing increases, the farther you get away from water.

    He went on to note that those who opposed the practice called it “mixed bathing”, while others called it, “mixed swimming.”

    This shows a scriptural model for leadership.
    Desire to lead- 1Tim 3:1 If anyone sets his heart on being an overseer…
    Unity- Matt 18:20 where two or more are gathered in my name. These three guys wanted to be together no matter the conditions.
    Sheep know the Shepherd’s voice- John 10:3 These guys were known and trusted by this sheep.
    Teaching- 1Tim 5:17 these guys placed the sheep on the board and spoke to it providing both an understanding of the gooal in mind and the mind of the sheep.
    Encouagement- Philippians 4:13-14 I can do all things through Christ who strengthens me, I was glad you were there with me to share in my burdens.
    Fellowship- 1Tim 2:8 they rallied around the new surfing sheep raising their hearts in praise to the Name.
    This is the kind of man in Christ I want to be. Willing to brave the cold waters of the world to lead a willing soul into the waters of Revolutionary Grace. To know what and how to share the Truth to a soul who is willing to hear God’s call. To work with fellow believers willing to share the load. To go in first before the weak. To point them in the right direction and even give them a push. Then to shout for joy at the least of victories and follow them to the shores of safety. That’s the leader I want to be.
