John’s Gospel: Reflections on Chapter 9, Part 3.1 (Born in Time)

To set the mood —

In the hills of mystery,
In the foggy web of destiny,
You can have what’s left of me,
Where we were born in time.

Bob Dylan’s song, performed by Eric Clapton

I love quest novels. You know, books like The Lord of the Rings where the hero is given a quest that requires great courage and strength. In the end, the quest is finally accomplished, and the readers are left to wonder whether the quest was predestined by the hand of fate. Continue reading

John’s Gospel: Reflections on Chapter 9, Part 2 (Why heal on the Sabbath?)

We regularly ask why it was okay for Jesus to heal on the Sabbath, but we rarely ask why he chose to do so.

Think about it. John expends chapters 5, 7, 8, and 9 dealing with Jesus’ healing on the Sabbath, not to debate whether that was sin but to consider the reaction of the people to Jesus’ behavior.

We see that the choice put Jesus very much at risk for his life. Indeed, but for God’s own intervention, surely he would have been arrested, if not stoned by vigilante justice. This is not the behavior of conventional wisdom! Continue reading

John’s Gospel: Reflections on Chapter 9, Part 1 (Why the Pharisees did not believe)

Chapter 9 is another comedic chapter. Rather than Jesus’ debating the Jewish religious leaders, this dialog falls to a blind man.

Jesus lets his case be argued by a man who’d never seen a Torah scroll, who’d never read the holy text in the synagogue, and who was considered an “utter” sinner by friends, families, and rulers alike.

Why heal this man out of the thousands of blind men in Judea? Because this man saw better than most. Indeed, his lack of formal schooling in the theology of the day allowed him to see far better than leaders. Continue reading

Reader Looking for Church in New York City

A reader has emailed me for a church in the New York City to recommend. He is leaving a highly legalistic environment and struggling to deal with his new knowledge of grace. He needs a church that can support him as he rediscovers Jesus.

Any suggestions?

New Search Feature

I’ve replaced the default WordPress search box with an improved, more modern search feature.

It looks the same, but now you can search with quotations and with “or” and “and” searches.

If you use two or more words and no quotation marks, it assumes an “or” search.

The old search box was purely a string search, that is, if you searched for “John” you’d get hits for “John” and “Johnny” as well.

I hope this helps you use and enjoy the site.

John’s Gospel: Chapter 9:18-41 (“I was blind, but now I see”)

(John 9:18-21 ESV) 18 The Jews did not believe that he had been blind and had received his sight, until they called the parents of the man who had received his sight  19 and asked them, “Is this your son, who you say was born blind? How then does he now see?”  20 His parents answered, “We know that this is our son and that he was born blind.  21 But how he now sees we do not know, nor do we know who opened his eyes. Ask him; he is of age. He will speak for himself.”

We lawyers have this (cynical) saying: “When the law is against you, argue the facts; when the facts are against you, argue the law; when both are against you, just argue.” (There are other punch lines available.)

And so the Pharisees, unable to argue Law as against the facts, sought to dispute the facts. Continue reading

Johnny Football

I am so looking forward to the fall trip to College Station to even the score with A&M. (I’m a Johnny Football fan, but a fan who wants him to lose one game in 2013.)

John’s Gospel: Chapter 9:6-17 (“I washed, and I see”)

(John 9:6-7 ESV)  6 Having said these things, he spit on the ground and made mud with the saliva. Then he anointed the man’s eyes with the mud  7 and said to him, “Go, wash in the pool of Siloam” (which means Sent). So he went and washed and came back seeing.

Readers have long been fascinated with Jesus’ choice to heal using mud and spit (gross!). Obviously, Jesus could have healed with a word. Why this approach? Continue reading

John L. Edwards, An In Depth Study of Marriage and Divorce

An In Depth Study of Marriage & DivorceIt’s taken me far too long, but I have finally gotten the answer for the readers who want to obtain John L. Edwards’ excellent An In Depth Study of Marriage & Divorce.

The book is out of print, but Br. Edwards has plenty of books on hand that he’s glad to sell for $12 plus shipping.

He can be reached by mail at —

John Edwards
2068 South Broadway Ave
Springfield MO 65807

or by phone at 417-882-2007. (Yes, I have his permission to give out the number. He’d enjoy a call from those who appreciate his work.)

Br. Edwards is retired and 91 years old. The cost of shipping varies with the number of books ordered — so order a lot and save money!

UPDATE: Br. Edwards passed away January 13, 2013. His passing received no mention in the Church of Christ press, but John’s book has been the largest influence in the Churches of Christ to take us away from a legalistic view of divorce and remarriage. He helped point us toward the true meaning of the teachings of Jesus and Paul within a gospel of grace, forgiveness, and reconciliation. He deserves to be remembered very well indeed.

My understanding is that his widow is still glad to accept book orders and enjoys calls from readers who wish to learn John’s teaching on divorce and remarriage.

SECOND UPDATE: Br. Edwards’ wife, I am told, predeceased him and his supply of books is exhausted or very nearly so.

If anyone knows how to reach his children, I would love to contact them regarding obtaining the rights to his book so it could continue to be made available.

John’s Gospel: Chapter 9:1-5 (“Who sinned, this man or his parents?”)

[If things go as planned, the materials issued on chapters 7 and 8 conclude the spring quarter for our adult Bible classes. Maybe this will be for the summer quarter of 2013.]

(John 9:1-2 ESV)  As he passed by, he saw a man blind from birth.  2 And his disciples asked him, “Rabbi, who sinned, this man or his parents, that he was born blind?”

The Jews understood that the brokenness of the world, including disease, results from sin. However, they incorrectly concluded that only the sinner would suffer from this sin. Continue reading
