Creation 2.0: God’s Cosmic Plan, Part 2

God’s cosmic plan, dating back to the foundations of the Creation, is for us to be saved so that we’ll do certain works that he prepared for us. What works?

He begins to explain in —

(Eph 4:11-12 ESV)  11 And he gave the apostles, the prophets, the evangelists, the shepherds and teachers,  12 to equip the saints for the work of ministry, for building up the body of Christ,

First, some of us are gifted as leaders and therefore called to “equip” Christians minister to (serve) one another to build up the church. Continue reading

Creation 2.0: God’s Cosmic Plan, Part 1

Ephesians is perhaps Paul’s most global, cosmic epistle — although Colossians gives it a run for its money. If you want the big picture, flip to Ephesians.

(Eph 1:3-6 ESV)  3 Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, who has blessed us in Christ with every spiritual blessing in the heavenly places,  4 even as he chose us in him before the foundation of the world, that we should be holy and blameless before him. In love  5 he predestined us for adoption as sons through Jesus Christ, according to the purpose of his will,  6 to the praise of his glorious grace, with which he has blessed us in the Beloved. Creation 2.0: The New Creation, Part 2

Paul gives a lesson on how to be new creations in Colossians. (A very interesting and rewarding epistle we rarely cover in Bible class. I have no idea why.)

(Col 3:8-10 ESV)  8 But now you must put them all away: anger, wrath, malice, slander, and obscene talk from your mouth.  9 Do not lie to one another, seeing that you have put off the old self with its practices  10 and have put on the new self, which is being renewed in knowledge after the image of its creator. Creation 2.0: The New Creation, Part 1

There’s this strand of thought in the New Testament that we rarely talk about (well, several such strands are out there, actually). You see, Paul likes to talk about Christians as being a “new creation.”

(2Co 5:17 ESV) Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation. The old has passed away; behold, the new has come.

(Gal 6:15 ESV)  For neither circumcision counts for anything, nor uncircumcision, but a new creation. Continue reading

Creation 2.0: Shepherding 2.0, Part 5

We need to turn to Ezekiel 34, which lies behind most of the “shepherd” passages in the New Testament (along with, of course, Psalm 23)

It’s not easily applied directly to church elders, because Ezekiel is speaking of a nation, not a congregation. But the heart of the passage is plenty clear enough. Continue reading

Creation 2.0: Shepherding 2.0, Part 4

We need to continue with Jesus’ teaching in John 10 —

(John 10:11-13 ESV)  11 “I am the good shepherd. The good shepherd lays down his life for the sheep.  12 He who is a hired hand and not a shepherd, who does not own the sheep, sees the wolf coming and leaves the sheep and flees, and the wolf snatches them and scatters them.  13 He flees because he is a hired hand and cares nothing for the sheep.” Continue reading

Creation 2.0: Shepherding 2.0, Part 3

Now, obviously, the scriptures don’t require all elders to have doctorates in theology, but clearly they are required to know the gospel well enough to teach its basics to the members.

(Tit 1:9 ESV) 9 He must hold firm to the trustworthy word as taught, so that he may be able to give instruction in sound doctrine and also to rebuke those who contradict it.

(1Ti 3:2-3 ESV) 2 Therefore an overseer must be … able to teach … . Continue reading

Creation 2.0: Shepherding 2.0, Part 2

There are, of course, many other passages that speak to the role of elders/overseers/shepherds. I want to focus here on the “shepherd” passages, but I want to approach them from a somewhat unconventional direction.

We begin with —

(Deu 8:2-3 ESV)  2 And you shall remember the whole way that the LORD your God has led you these forty years in the wilderness, that he might humble you, testing you to know what was in your heart, whether you would keep his commandments or not.  3 And he humbled you and let you hunger and fed you with manna, which you did not know, nor did your fathers know, that he might make you know that man does not live by bread alone, but man lives by every word that comes from the mouth of the LORD. Creation 2.0: Shepherding 2.0, Part 1

We Americans are free-enterprise, consumers deep in our bones. Therefore, we drink deeply from the well of retail.

“The customer is always right.”

“Satisfaction guaranteed or your money back.”

“Thirty days free trial!”

We sell Christianity by trying to make it low cost, high value. Continue reading

Creation 2.0: Spiritual Formation, Part 2

This is a pet peeve, but an important one. Nearly all the spiritual disciplines advocated for in Christian literature are individual disciplines — prayer, meditation, solitude, Bible study, etc.

Indeed, most of these are the sorts of things that can only be done alone. And the entire thrust of scripture is toward community.

Yes, yes, yes, we should all have a personal relationship with Jesus, but we should also have a community relationship with Jesus. Indeed, God created Adam and Eve. The only thing God made that he declared “not good” was that it was “not good” that Adam be alone! Continue reading
