Galatians III:27-28 Questions for Students (Tuesday, July 17, 2012 — Saturday, July 21, 2012)

Galatians 3:26-27

Seventh Week

Tuesday

July 17, 2012

We’re going to take a week to focus on these verses because they raise challenging questions about the role of women and baptism.

Of course, in one week, we can hardly do justice to these topics. But we can at least try to fairly assess what these key verses say on the topic — recognizing that there are other passages that must be considered.

In other words, this is not the end of the study, but the beginning. But there’s no better place to begin than Galatians. Continue reading

Faith that Works: Love in Community

Love in community

Paul next teaches us how to love each other. This is one of my favorite passages, but we’ve covered it in detail before, and so I’ll resist the temptation to go verse by verse.

Here’s the big deal. These simple instructions are the very core of the Torah of the Spirit of life. This is how we become living sacrifices. This what we become when God transforms our minds. This is how the gifts of service, mercy, etc. play out in church. Continue reading

Faith that Works: Living Sacrifices

Roman 12:1-2

(Rom 12:1 ESV) I appeal to you therefore, brothers, by the mercies of God, to present your bodies as a living sacrifice, holy and acceptable to God, which is your spiritual worship.

Notice the “therefore.” The need to become living sacrifices follows from all that precedes. Ultimately, of course, it’s about becoming like Jesus.

Notice the “by the mercies of God” — very strong language for  Jewish rabbi, very nearly an oath — meaning that if God’s mercy — his grace — has any meaning to us at all, we’ll respond by sacrificing ourselves. Continue reading

Galatians: The Holy Spirit in the Old Testament, Review and Supplemental Material (Monday, July 9, 2012)

The Holy Spirit

Sixth Week

Monday

July 9, 2012

Imagine the scene. Nearly all the Israelites who’d left Egypt with Moses had died in the desert. The next generation — desert-hardened, accustomed to traveling as led by God’s special presence in the camp — prepared to cross the Jordan and conquer the Promised Land.

God called the people together to remind them of the covenant he’d made with their parents — a covenant we call “Deuteronomy” or “Second Law,” because this was the second giving of the Law of Moses.

Memorial Day Steaks A La Ruth’s Chris

I realize that there are bigger issues confronting the world, but lately I’ve been worried a lot about the price of steaks. It’s just really expensive to eat out, you know, and I don’t know whose fault it is. I’ll leave that to the politicians and economists to sort out. For me and my house, the answer is: cook your own.

And that salient observation led my son Tyler — a newly minted chemical engineer — and me to the Great Ruth’s Chris Steak Experiment.

You see, we love Ruth’s Chris Steak House steaks. We just don’t love paying the price. I have four sons. A daughter-in-law. Another soon-to-be daughter-in-law. They have friends. At $40 per steak, a la carte, Ruth’s Chris is just not an option. Continue reading

Faith that Works: Attaining to the Image of God and Torah

Reflecting on Genesis

Before we go any farther, we need to reflect a bit more deeply on what Paul has been saying — in light of the Law and the Prophets. We begin, of course, in Genesis. Fortunately, Paul is happy to lead the discussion.

The Creation account of Genesis 1 tells us that God created man in God’s own image — a plural image destined to rule — that is, to reign as kings.

(Gen 1:26 NAS) Then God said, “Let Us make man in Our image, according to Our likeness; and let them rule over the fish of the sea and over the birds of the sky and over the cattle and over all the earth, and over every creeping thing that creeps on the earth.”

After the Fall of Man in Genesis 3, the story of God’s dealings with man is his work to restore mankind to his image. Continue reading

Galatians Material Now Public

I’ve been posting the Galatians material in password-protected format while I worked on how to create the material and received feedback from other members of my congregation’s adult education team. I’m leaving the teacher notes password protected for now, but anyone planning to teach the material is welcome to a password. Just contact me via email at jfguin(at)comcast(dot)net or using the Contact form.

I’ve now freed the rest of the material from password protection. There will be more to come, of course, but this covers the first month of the quarter.

A listing of all the material posted and yet to come is available at the “Galatians: Free to Live for Christ” page with a link at the top and in the Pages section to the right. Continue reading
