Churches of Christ: Why They Left: Chapter 4, Part 2

Why They Left: Listening to Those Who Have Left Churches of Christ by Flavil R. Yeakley, Jr.We are reflecting on Why They Left: Listening to Those Who Have Left Churches of Christ by Flavil R. Yeakley, Jr.

In dealing with a survey of former Church of Christ members, Yeakley next addresses the complaint of many that “Churches of Christ do not believe in salvation by grace through faith.”

Yeakley denies it, asserting,

There may be a few Churches of Christ where that position is what one hears, but that is not what most of us believe.

He then argues for a very orthodox and, I believe, sound understanding of grace. Good. But he knows his Bible far better than he knows his denomination.  Continue reading

Amazing Grace: Is Ignorance of God’s Will an Excuse?

I get emails —

In your view do Leviticus 4:13 and Psalm 19:12 prove that ignorance is no excuse of the law? If so then what kind of ignorance?

You know, all my life, Church of Christ preachers have argued that ignorance of the law is no excuse. I’m a lawyer. And ignorance is not an excuse — in civil court. But when we begin applying American legal principles to Christianity, well, we just might be legalists. Continue reading

Churches of Christ: Why They Left: Chapters 3 and 4, Part 1

Why They Left: Listening to Those Who Have Left Churches of Christ by Flavil R. Yeakley, Jr.We are reflecting on Why They Left: Listening to Those Who Have Left Churches of Christ by Flavil R. Yeakley, Jr.

The first two chapters of the book give the raw data. The next few chapters summarize the reasons given for leaving the Churches of Christ by people who left. The chapters are based on 300 essay responses.

The approach is not entirely scientific, as Yeakley points out, as the survey resulted from an online questionnaire advertised via the Christian Chronicle. Only those former members who still read the Chronicle would be likely to know about the survey. Continue reading

Churches of Christ: Why They Left: Chapter 2

Why They Left: Listening to Those Who Have Left Churches of Christ by Flavil R. Yeakley, Jr.We are reflecting on Why They Left: Listening to Those Who Have Left Churches of Christ by Flavil R. Yeakley, Jr.

Yeakley demonstrates that the problem of plateaued and declining numbers is not unique to the Churches of Christ. Most denominations are suffering similar problems.

However, the Churches of Christ have been plateaued (near zero growth) for decades, going back to 1980, whereas in the latter part of the 20th Century, many denominations enjoyed dramatic growth. Continue reading

Churches of Christ: Why They Left: Chapter 1

Why They Left: Listening to Those Who Have Left Churches of Christ by Flavil R. Yeakley, Jr.We are reflecting on Why They Left: Listening to Those Who Have Left Churches of Christ by Flavil R. Yeakley, Jr.

Yeakley begins by pointing out that the Stone-Campbell or Restoration Movement produced three major denominations.

In terms of total adherents (baptized members plus their unbaptized children), the three denominations* rank as the 12th (Churches of Christ), 13th (Christian Churches and Churches of Christ**), and 14th (Christian Church (Disciples of Christ)) largest denominations in the US. Continue reading

Churches of Christ: Why They Left: Introduction

Why They Left: Listening to Those Who Have Left Churches of Christ by Flavil R. Yeakley, Jr.The Gospel Advocate has recently published Why They Left: Listening to Those Who Have Left Churches of Christ by Flavil R. Yeakley, Jr. (Sadly, not available in electronic form.)

Dr. Yeakley has long served as an un-official statistician for the Churches of Christ, and his work has been extremely valuable to the Churches. It’s due to Dr. Yeakley’s research that we know that the Churches of Christ are in decline in terms of members, members and adherents (members plus unbaptized children), and congregations.

In this book, he looks at the available data as to why this is so. It’s a valuable resource and much appreciated. Continue reading

Tulsa Lectures: First and Third Class, On a Mission from God

To be a disciple is to be on a mission from God. (It’s a mission that’s even bigger than bringing blues music to the masses.)

It’s about restoring the reign of God over the world. It’s bringing into its fullness the prophets’ vision of the Kingdom as a place of peace, justice, health, and prosperity for all.

Ultimately, it’s about everyone bending his knees before God, as revealed in Jesus, so that God’s will is done on earth as it is in heaven. Continue reading

Tulsa Lectures: First and Third Class, A Question from a Preacher Candidate

So we’ve been in a preacher search since July of last year. It’s been an interesting experience. We’ve spent a lot of time with a lot of preachers, listened to a lot of sermons.

(If listening to sermons makes one holier, I’m the holiest man on earth!) Continue reading

Further on the Virus Problem

The virus came back. Theobloggers has once again cleaned it up. I’m now trying to find the hole that let the varmint in.

For a few months, I allowed readers to subscribe to the site using the WordPress native “Subscriber” function, way down at the bottom of the right column. I turned that feature off when I got over 3,000 subscribers that all looked like spammers.

I couldn’t see much harm in sending them emails (and it seemed only fair to spam the spammers!), but I now wonder whether one of those used the subscriber feature to hack the site. After all, being a subscriber is but a checkmark in a box away from being an administrator.

Therefore, I’m deleting all subscribers — but not those who subscribed to emails using the “Subscribe to Email” feature at the top of the right column. It’s built on a different system and doesn’t seem to carry the same potential for hacking.

But it’s possible that I’ve deleted some legitimate subscribers. If you’ve stopped receiving emails, please re-subscribe via the “Subscribe to Email” feature at the top of the right column. I apologize for the inconvenience, but I’ve just got to kill this virus.
