After quite a bit of drama, it appears as though we’ve managed to get the database corrected so that Greek text will appear. How about Hebrew? Anyone care to try in the comments?

The Fork in the Road: “The Way of UNITY between “Christian Churches” and Churches of Christ,” Dec. 20-27 Comments

Here are the comments received on the The Fork in the Road: “The Way of UNITY between “Christian Churches” and Churches of Christ,” Part 1 post from December 20 to December 27, that is, between crash and restoration of the back up.

It would take days and days to restore the comments as comments, and they’d all post with my icon next to them. So I’m posting them as a post so that anyone wishing to do so may easily rejoin the discussion below.

Sadly, my own comments appear to be lost forever, as I don’t get my own comments by email. If anyone has one of mine from this time they’d like to see reposted, forward it to me. But I don’t recall saying anything particularly worth preserving.

These are also the only comments I’m planning to repost, as they are 80% of what was posted after the crash, and the only questions that seemed to me to be still under discussion. But if you would like to see more comments re-posted, just let me know. Continue reading

Progress: The Site Will be Down Beginning 10:00 PM CT Tonight

We’re taking the site down at 10:00 PM CT in homes of bringing it up later this evening able to use Greek and Hebrew fonts — without destroying the site.

There will be a new back up at 10:00, and any comments posted afterwards, during the process, will likely be lost. During the process, the site won’t look right and may not even be available. Once the site is back up, we should be done for the foreseeable future.

The Fork in the Road: “The Way of UNITY between “Christian Churches” and Churches of Christ” — The Return of the Lost Comments

Tonight, Lord willing, I’ll post all the comments from Part 1 of this series since the website crashed on December 20, to facilitate the continuation of the discussion.

There have been over 100 comments on this post during the last week, despite the Christmas holiday, and I’d hate to see the discussion end.

If there are other threads the readers would like me to restore, please let me know. I’ll get them up as quickly as I can.

An Exchange of Comments with Ray: Ray’s Comments

First, Ray’s comment to which I was responding, and then his three later comments. I quoted nearly all of his first comment in mine, but figure he’s entitled to have the full text posted.

Ray at 7:56 PM.

I figure the reason Jay thinks the apostles received the “gift of the Spirit” without being immersed is that he for some reason wants to believe every gift of the Spirit is identical, which they are obviously not. Since there is no record of the apostles being baptized for the remission of their sins after the death, burial and resurrection of Jesus, it might be surmised that they were not baptized with “Christian baptism.” But that’s not taught doctrine. It’s a guess. Continue reading

An Exchange of Comments with Ray: My Comment

Ray’s comment and my reply were deleted in the restoring of the site from back up. Here’s my comment from earlier this evening. I’ll post Ray’s responses in a second posts:

One In Jesus Crash Report

The old posts and pages for One In Jesus have been restored from back up. However, the back up is dated December 20, meaning all posts and comments since then are lost. But the previous five years worth of posts, comments, and pages are all back up and in good order.

I can recover the missing posts — there are only one or two — but I’m not so sure about the comments. Don’t panic yet. (I’m doing enough panicking for all of us.)

I have copies of all comments for the last several days, but there are over a hundred of them. If I post them myself, it will look as though I’m the author. And so, if you wish, I can send you your comments and you can cut and paste them back in the blog, although they’ll be out of order.

I’m open to any other suggestions you might have. For example, where there was an ongoing conversation, I could post the missing comments in a post, post-by-post, and let the thread continue from there.

Meanwhile, the restored site will no longer do Greek, but that’s being worked on, too.

Some of you may receive emailed posts for a second time, and that’s just a side effect of the restoration of the back up. Just delete the extra posts. It won’t be a continuing problem.

I apologize for the lost comments. It normally wouldn’t have been as severe, but the holidays hit immediately after the crash, forcing a delay in restoring the lost posts.

Growing Up Church of Christ, by Mike Allen

Mike Allen, a son of the evangelist and author Jimmy Allen, has published a memoir of his life growing up in the Churches of Christ as the son of a famous revival preacher: Growing Up Church of Christ.

The book is written in a distinctive style. John Dobbs said it well –

Reading Growing Up Church of Christ is like reading someone’s journal … short anecdotes about … well… growing up Church of Christ. I am not sure that those who have a faith family outside of ours will understand the significance of most of it.

Exactly. Continue reading

Logos Bible Software, Part 3

Comparison with BibleWorks

Both Logos and BibleWorks have advantages. As I’m stilling learning the intricacies of BibleWorks, I’m sure it’ll take even longer to master Logos. Therefore, these conclusions must be taken as preliminary.

After a few weeks of practice, I’ll post an update. Continue reading
