The Fork in the Road: “The Way of UNITY between “Christian Churches” and Churches of Christ,” Part 2

Would the instrumental churches impose the instrument on the rest?

Boles continues his arguments —

The other alternative that many took, and still advocate, is to place the organ in the “area of silence” or in the field of expediency. But if there is no stronger reason for using the instrument than the opinions and judgments of men, it is sinful to force the use of the instrument in worshiping upon God’s people.

Even today, there remains a carefully cultivated resentment against 19th Century instrumental churches that forced their members to either sing with an instrument or change congregations. But those fights are over 100 years old today. They were decades old in Boles’ day (future post coming with more detail). No one at that unity meeting was seeking to impose instrumental music on anyone. The goal was for the a cappella churches to accept instrumental congregations as sister churches, not to force unity of worship styles. Continue reading

My Sermon on Peace

I’ve only preached one sermon in my life, that is, before Sunday. I was in high school and we had one of those Sunday nights when the teens lead the service. I spoke five minutes on Romans 14. They never asked me back.

Now, at my home church, we’re between preachers. Desperate to fill the pulpit, they stuck me in there. Here’s the sermon I prepared. I, of course, extemporized to my own detriment, but I can’t help myself.

SERMON ON PEACE

Just to be clear: I’m not a candidate for the preaching position. No, I’m here to make the real candidate look good. I’m the bottom of the barrel. It’s all uphill from here … Continue reading

The Fork in the Road: “The Way of UNITY between “Christian Churches” and Churches of Christ,” Part 1

My favorite conservative preacher — and the newly minted editor of the Gospel Advocate — G. A. Tidwell posted this comment:

The best position on this issue [inclusion of instrumental congregations in the Churches of Christ] was well stated by my predecessor, H. Leo Boles in 1939.

http://www.therestorationmovement.com/unity1.htm

The link takes the reader to a 1939 speech given by H. Leo Boles to a unity meeting between the instrumental and non-instrumental churches in the Restoration Movement. Boles was editor of the Gospel Advocate and a grandson of frontier Restoration preacher “Raccoon” John Smith.” The Movement had, of course, split over the issue, beginning with the “Sand Creek Address and Declaration” in 1889, with the split growing so wide that by 1906 David Lipscomb, then editor of the Gospel Advocate, advised the U.S. Census to count the a cappella Churches of Christ as a different denomination from the instrumental churches. Acts: 2:12-21 (New Wine, Daughters, and Judgment)

New wine

(Act 2:12-13 ESV) 12 And all were amazed and perplexed, saying to one another, “What does this mean?”  13 But others mocking said, “They are filled with new wine.”

Don’t you love Luke’s sense of humor? Remember, this is volume 2 of Luke-Acts. And Luke includes —

(Luk 5:36-39 ESV) 36 He also told them a parable: “No one tears a piece from a new garment and puts it on an old garment. If he does, he will tear the new, and the piece from the new will not match the old.  37 And no one puts new wine into old wineskins. If he does, the new wine will burst the skins and it will be spilled, and the skins will be destroyed.  38 But new wine must be put into fresh wineskins.  39 And no one after drinking old wine desires new, for he says, ‘The old is good.'”

The disciples were filled with new wine! Just not the kind of wine the listeners expected. Continue reading

Acts/Community Disciplines: Missio Dei

Missio Dei (pronounced Missio Day) is Latin for either “the mission of God” or “the sending of God.” It’s something that theologians have been discussing for the last several decades, but the idea has only recently really caught on as a common theme in evangelical conversations. And, as you might expect, Acts is at the center of the discussion.

Acts demonstrates that the church’s mission is an element of God’s mission. We Americans tend to be secret Deists, that is, we have trouble believing that God remains powerfully active in the world. Therefore, we tend to figure God’s mission is 100% up to us because, well, God has retired. We’d never say that, but we certainly act that way.

Here’s the idea that “Missio Dei” tries to capture — Continue reading

Acts 2:4-11 (The Spirit, Tongues, Mighty Works)

(Act 2:4 ESV)  4 And they were all filled with the Holy Spirit and began to speak in other tongues as the Spirit gave them utterance.

Filled with the Spirit

“Filled with the Holy Spirit” is a phrase that will appear a number of times in Luke-Acts —

(Luk 1:15 ESV) for he will be great before the Lord. And he must not drink wine or strong drink, and he will be filled with the Holy Spirit, even from his mother’s womb.

(Luk 1:41 ESV)  And when Elizabeth heard the greeting of Mary, the baby leaped in her womb. And Elizabeth was filled with the Holy Spirit,

(Luk 1:67 ESV) And his father Zechariah was filled with the Holy Spirit and prophesied, saying, Continue reading

Churches of Christ in Decline: 21st Century Christian changes policy on what is a Church of Christ

Long-time readers will remember the controversy that arose in early 2009 over the new edition of Churches of Christ in the United States. At that time, 21st Century Christian decided to exclude instrumental congregations — even congregations with both instrumental and a cappella services that continued to be in active communion with other Churches of Christ, such as The Hills Church of Christ (formerly Richland Hills Church of Christ) in Ft. Worth, our largest congregation.

I protested this change vehemently — Continue reading
