Bethel Church of Christ Destroyed

The Christian Chronicle just posted a report on the Bethel Church of Christ in Athens, Alabama that was also destroyed by tornado Wednesday night.

Real Restoration: Isaiah: The Nations; The End of Time

The Nations

(Isa 66:12-19a ESV) 12 For thus says the LORD: “Behold, I will extend peace to her like a river, and the glory of the nations like an overflowing stream; and you shall nurse, you shall be carried upon her hip, and bounced upon her knees.  13 As one whom his mother comforts, so I will comfort you; you shall be comforted in Jerusalem.  14 You shall see, and your heart shall rejoice; your bones shall flourish like the grass; and the hand of the LORD shall be known to his servants, and he shall show his indignation against his enemies.  …

18 “For I know their works and their thoughts, and the time is coming to gather all nations and tongues. And they shall come and shall see my glory,  19 and I will set a sign among them.”

God promises “peace … like a river” and the inbringing of the nations — “all nations and tongues” — a reference to God’s covenant with Abraham to bless the nations and to end of the division of the nations by tongues at Babel. Continue reading

How to Volunteer

There’s plenty of work to do, and there will be for a very long time. However, there are no available hotels. Even police from out of town are sleeping on the floors of churches and junior colleges. Don’t come without first being sure you have a place to stay. Continue reading

Tornado Status — Friday Edition

As many have heard, our sister congregation, the Central Church of Christ, lost its building. Here are some photos. The first is from the front — off Hargrove Road. You can see that several relief workers are staging from their parking lot.

The second is from a different angle. Continue reading

Thought Question: The Continuing Viability of Bible Bowls

The Christian Chronicle recently ran a story on Bible bowls: “Textual preparation or trivial pursuit?”

Now, what I know about Bible bowls is that the Christian Chronicle recently ran a story on Bible bowls. Really. I’ve never been in one. I’ve never seen one. My church doesn’t do these, and I don’t know that we ever have.

But when I was a teenager, I’d heard of these things. Distant rumors made their way to my ears. I thought … it might be a good way to meet girls from other churches.

I know people have strong feelings on the subject. Some argue that our Bible instruction during the teenage years is sadly lacking. Some think the cure is a return to the Bible bowl. I don’t know.

The article presents both sides of the argument, and I’ll not repeat that here. I do think competition is not inherently un-Christian. It’s a game, and it’s fine to try to win a game. Of course, competition can become sinful if it leads to arrogance or dehumanizing the opponent. But I would imagine that’s far more likely in football than in a Bible bowl. But like I said, I’ve never really experienced it.

So what do you think? Should churches encourage their youth ministries to participate in Bible bowls?

Tornado Information

Here are two websites where you can get up to date information on recovery efforts as well as videos and photos:

The Tuscaloosa News

AL.COM (consolidated website for several major Alabama newspapers, covering entire state)

Evidently some areas are being opened up to traffic — and hence to volunteers. The police had the entire area cordoned off earlier today due to natural gas leaks and fallen power lines.

I should have more information in the morning on how to volunteer or otherwise help in the relief effort.

Those Offering Tornado Relief

I’ve received several emails, phone calls, and Facebook messages offering to help with the recovery here in Tuscaloosa, Alabama. I’ve made some calls to see how this can best be done. I really appreciate all the offers, but there are some we can’t accept.

Here’s what I know:

1. Do NOT send people. The police are letting NO ONE into the damaged areas due to gas leaks and downed power lines. This will likely change by Monday, but for now you just can’t get in — even if you own a home in the area. We have members who live there and aren’t being allowed back in. Continue reading

Tornado Part II

This video was taken from about a block away from an F5, which went through Tuscaloosa in an area filled with apartments and retail buildings, leveling a path miles long and 2 blocks wide. My apologies for the cameraman’s language, but I think you’ll agree it was understandable under the circumstances.

I am fine, as is my family. So far, we have no reports of serious injury or death among the members of my church, but there are over 30 dead in Tuscaloosa and likely more. Search and rescue is ongoing.

Two of my employees lost their houses but survived.

While my congregation’s church building is fine, several churches in town lost theirs. City services are compromised, but much of the city is untouched.

I’ve lost power at my home, but it appears otherwise undamaged, and so I’m posting from the office, which was untouched. In fact, most of Tuscaloosa was untouched. But the areas affected are utterly devastated.

Real Worship: Part 12: The Assembly Done Right

The goal of the assembly

Christian theology is centered on Christ. In particular, God sent Jesus so that God’s children could be formed in the image of Christ.

(Gal 4:18-19 ESV) 18 It is always good to be made much of for a good purpose, and not only when I am present with you, 19 my little children, for whom I am again in the anguish of childbirth until Christ is formed in you!

Countless New Testament passages set up Jesus as the standard for how we are to act and the kind of people we are to be. We run into this concept whether we are talking about how the Old Testament concept of worship is transformed in the new covenant or whether we are talking about the assembly. Continue reading
