Baptism, an Exploration: Part 9 (Baptism in John’s Gospel) (The Before Post)

JESUS BAPTISM[This is taken from Born of Water, my book on baptism. It’s edited, but not greatly changed. But after I loaded this into the blogging software, I re-thought my position. And so I thought it might be helpful to post both the “before” and “after” posts. The “after” post will be in four parts, because we’ll have to delve into some rich, unfamiliar, and to me, interesting material.]

John’s gospel says very little explicitly about Christian baptism. Of course, there are passages that likely refer to Christian baptism, using other words, as we’ll consider in more detail.

John the Baptist’s testimony

John doesn’t record Jesus’ baptism directly, but rather records John’s description of it — and John uses the event to identify Jesus as the Messiah —

(John 1:29-34 ESV)  29 The next day he saw Jesus coming toward him, and said, “Behold, the Lamb of God, who takes away the sin of the world!  30 This is he of whom I said, ‘After me comes a man who ranks before me, because he was before me.’  31 I myself did not know him, but for this purpose I came baptizing with water, that he might be revealed to Israel.”  32 And John bore witness: “I saw the Spirit descend from heaven like a dove, and it remained on him.  33 I myself did not know him, but he who sent me to baptize with water said to me, ‘He on whom you see the Spirit descend and remain, this is he who baptizes with the Holy Spirit.’  34 And I have seen and have borne witness that this is the Son of God.” Continue reading

Instrumental Worship Song: Lift Up Your Eyes

Mark Scibilia

The LORD bless you and keep you;
The LORD make His face shine upon you, And be gracious to you;
The LORD lift up His countenance upon you, And give you peace. [Numbers 6:24-26]

Y’varekh’ka ADONAI v’yishmerekha
Ya’er ADONAI panav eleikha vichunekka
Yissa ADONAI panav eleikha v’yasem l’kha shalom

Lift up your eyes, Lift up your eyes
You who sit in darkness will see the light if you’ll Lift up your eyes

The LORD bless you and keep you.
The LORD make his face shine upon you and be gracious to you.
The LORD lift up His countenance upon you and give you peace.

Lift up your eyes, Lift up your eyes
You who sit in darkness will see the light if you’ll Lift up your eyes

Instrumental Worship Music of the Season: Give This Christmas Away (Veggie Tales version)

What if I told you
You have the power
To give someone hope
Beyond their wildest dreams
What if I told you
It’s right there in your hands
In your hands

It’s hard to imagine
How something so small
Can make all the difference
Tear down the tallest wall
What if December
Looked different this year
What if we all just

Give this Christmas away
If there’s love in your heart
Don’t let it stay there
Give this Christmas away
And your life will be changed
By the gifts you receive
When you give this Christmas away

It’s feeding the hungry
Serving the poor
It’s telling the orphan
You’re not forgotten anymore
It’s doing what love does
Even when no one’s watching you

Give this Christmas away
If there’s love in your heart
Don’t let it stay there
Give this Christmas away
And your life will be changed
By the gifts you receive
When you give this Christmas away
For God so loved the world
That He gave His only Son
So we could be
His hands, His feet, His love
His love

What if I told you
You have the power
To give someone hope
Far beyond their wildest dreams
What if December
Looked different this year
Yah what if we all just

Give this Christmas away
If there’s love in your heart
Don’t let it stay there
Give this Christmas away
And your life will be changed
By the gifts you receive
When you give this Christmas away

Give this Christmas away
You have the power
Just give it away
Give it away
Give it away
This Christmas
Give it away
Give Christmas away
Give it away

Instrumental Worship Music of the Season: There Is a Reason

Alison Krauss and Union Station (not exactly a Christmas song, but I like it)

I’ve seen hard times and I’ve been told
There isn’t any wonder that I fall
Why do we suffer, crossing off the years
There must be a reason for it all

I’ve trusted in You, Jesus, to save me from my sin
Heaven is the place I call my home
But I keep on getting caught up in this world I’m living in
And Your voice it sometimes fades before I know

Hurtin’ brings my heart to You, crying with my need
Depending on Your love to carry me
The love that shed His blood for all the world to see
This must be the reason for it all

Hurtin’ brings my heart to You, a fortress in the storm
When what I wrap my heart around is gone
I give my heart so easily to the ruler of this world
When the one who loves me most will give me all

In all the things that cause me pain You give me eyes to see
I do believe but help my unbelief
I’ve seen hard times and I’ve been told
There is a reason for it all

Baptism, an Exploration: Part 8 (Lydia, Crispus, Apollos, the Ephesians, and Some Conclusions)

JESUS BAPTISMLydia and Crispus

(Act 16:13-15 ESV) 13 And on the Sabbath day we went outside the gate to the riverside, where we supposed there was a place of prayer, and we sat down and spoke to the women who had come together. 14 One who heard us was a woman named Lydia, from the city of Thyatira, a seller of purple goods, who was a worshiper of God. The Lord opened her heart to pay attention to what was said by Paul. 15 And after she was baptized, and her household as well, she urged us, saying, “If you have judged me to be faithful to the Lord, come to my house and stay.” And she prevailed upon us.

(Act 18:8 ESV) 8 Crispus, the ruler of the synagogue, believed in the Lord, together with his entire household. And many of the Corinthians hearing Paul believed and were baptized.

Here is the first references to baptism in Acts without an explicit reference to the Spirit — but by now, Luke has shown the relationship of water baptism to the Spirit. Now we see the normative flow: faith followed by baptism. It’s to be understood that the Spirit is received at this time. Continue reading

How to Explain Christmas to a Teenager

(I’m guessing I totally missed at least half the jokes. I’ve got to get one of my kids to explain some of this to me.)

Baptism, an Exploration: Samaria, Cornelius

JESUS BAPTISMSamaria

Phillip the Evangelist, the deacon, not the apostle, went to Samaria and made the first Christian converts there. But there was a problem —

(Act 8:14-17 ESV) 14 Now when the apostles at Jerusalem heard that Samaria had received the word of God, they sent to them Peter and John, 15 who came down and prayed for them that they might receive the Holy Spirit, 16 for he had not yet fallen on any of them, but they had only been baptized in the name of the Lord Jesus. 17 Then they laid their hands on them and they received the Holy Spirit.

The Samaritans had been baptized but had not received the Spirit “yet” — contrary to all expectations, as the Spirit was normally received concurrently with water baptism (2:38). This was such a problem that the apostles Peter and John left Jerusalem, traveled to Samaria, and imparted the Spirt to the Samaritans. Continue reading

Instrumental Worship Music of the Season: What Child Is This?

Sung by The Choir of King’s College, Cambridge, 1995.

What child is this who laid to rest
On Mary’s lap is sleeping
Whom angels greet with anthems sweet
While shepherds watch are keeping

This, this is Christ the King
Whom shepherds guard and angels sing
Haste, haste to bring him laud
The babe, the son of Mary

Why lies he in such mean estate
Where ox and ass are feeding
Good Christian fear, for sinners here
The silent Word is pleading

So bring Him incense, gold, and myrrh
Come peasant king to own Him
The King of kings, salvation brings
Let loving hearts enthrone Him

This, this is Christ the King
Whom shepherds guard and angels sing
Haste, haste to bring him laud
The babe, the son of Mary
