Elders: The Shepherd Model, Answers to Questions

[Relocated from the comment section]

ShepherdJim asked,

We, as Shepherds, have and do struggle with this from time to time, especially when we first became Shepherds. I am interested in seeing the various opinions and suggestions that will be put forward. I have more questions than answers:

Me, too.

Should Shepherds/Elders/Overseers (E/S/O) delegate all business like decisions to the staff or lay committees? Does this include how contributions and ministries’ budgets are determined? Who has the responsibility for the final approval?

I think it depends on gifts — of the elders and those available to delegate to. There’s no absolute rule. But the elders have final approval authority always. But I think the wise eldership rarely overrules those to whom they delegate. Continue reading

A Bon Mot for the Tedium Sufferer

“Bored Out of My Soul” — unconventional Christian music by Chris Guin (Jay’s oldest son), sung by Kyle Sapp, piano by Chris Guin (2005).

Additional material may be found at Chris Guin Creations.

Got a tradition, the mission of old,
They say worship is true if you do as you’re told.
Attending’s demanding and standing is bold
In the emptying echoing cold.

Tell me you don’t doubt there’s
Something greater out there!

I’m so bored, I’m bored out of my soul.
It ain’t no way to praise the Lord, being bored out of my soul.

See intellectuals, textuals grind,
As if worship is great if debate is your line.
Want a tea cosy symposium? Fine.
We’ll discuss it and be out by nine.

Tell me you don’t doubt there’s
Something greater out there!

I’m so bored, I’m bored out of my soul.
It ain’t no way to praise the Lord, being bored out of my soul.

When your brain is feeling boredom pain
You better start to live that life.
When your skull starts to feeling dull
You better start to live that lovin’ life…

I’m so bored! I’m bored out of my soul!
It ain’t no way to praise the Lord, being bored out of my soul!

Cause a commotion! Emotion is in!
As if worship is real as you feel how you sin.
Confess every Sunday that Monday is when
You’ll repent but you start it again!

Tell me you don’t doubt there’s
Something greater out there!

I’m so bored, I’m bored out of my soul.
It ain’t no way to praise the Lord, being bored out of my soul!

I’m so bored, I’m bored out of my soul.
It ain’t no way to praise the Lord, being bored out of my soul!

Elders: The Shepherding Model, Part 1

IShepherd get emails —

I thought I’d get your perspective on what a biblical eldership looks like. Our current elders are using the Lynn Anderson material (DVD, workbooks, etc) “They Smell Like Sheep,” to try to become better shepherds, but it seems there are some on our visioning team (not elders) who feel that the shepherds should be prayer warriors and spiritual counselors/mentors, but should step away from the ‘business’ side of church leadership.

So my question is, what is the leadership structure of your church like? Do you know of any churches of Christ that are leading with either some type of committee, or even staff as its principal ‘business’ leadership while the elders serve strictly in spiritual, prayer, counseling, mentoring roles? How is it working for them? And how did they make the transition to that type of leadership structure? Continue reading

Clergy & Laity: He says he’s suffering from burn out. Is he serious? (The Minister)

Preachers can burn themselves out by —

* Not praying enough

* Not taking off enough time

* Not spending enough time in the word of God Continue reading

Church Finances and Business: Student Loan Reduction for Ministers and Others

https://i2.wp.com/www.sxc.hu/pic/m/s/sv/svilen001/966070_mortgage_and_money_6.jpg?resize=179%2C179Following up his earlier comment, reader Cary McCall has provided this explanation for how ministers (and many others) can reduce or even eliminate student loan payments.

Student Debt Relief for Ministers: The Basics

Cary McCall

One of the most burdensome financial obligations faced by many young ministers is an increasing student debt load. The rising cost of higher education is forcing many to rely heavily on financial aid, both for undergraduate and graduate educations. This is compounded for ministers who have sought education at private Christian universities, some of which have tuitions surpassing $700 (or more) per credit hour. The Master of Divinity, the most common ministry degree for preachers, is 84 hours. Although some schools help with scholarships and grants, most students end up with significant amounts of debt. The Holy Spirit: Romans 1 – 7

You may have noticed that I skipped Acts. I did. I’ll get there, but I think it’ll help to let Paul teach us some more about the Spirit before we take on some of the very challenging texts in Acts.

The Spirit and Jesus’ Resurrection

(Rom 1:1-6 ESV) Paul, a servant of Christ Jesus, called to be an apostle, set apart for the gospel of God,  2 which he promised beforehand through his prophets in the holy Scriptures,  3 concerning his Son, who was descended from David according to the flesh  4 and was declared to be the Son of God in power according to the Spirit of holiness by his resurrection from the dead, Jesus Christ our Lord, 5 through whom we have received grace and apostleship to bring about the obedience of faith for the sake of his name among all the nations,  6 including you who are called to belong to Jesus Christ,

Very early in Romans, Paul teaches that the Spirit resurrected Jesus. Continue reading

Clergy & Laity: He says he’s suffering from burn out. Is he serious? (Simple Church)

https://i0.wp.com/1.bp.blogspot.com/_bLBPZAiyuwA/SQkMldOkY5I/AAAAAAAAAJY/FlxoD65cNcE/s400/clerical_collar_9.jpg?resize=179%2C179One of the most important books in church literature to come out in a while is Simple Church: Returning to God’s Process for Making Disciples. It’s a quick and easy read — and very powerful. It’s premise is, well, simple: that we waste a lot of time doing things that aren’t productive. Ask less of our members but ask what’s important.

Of course, much the same principle applies to ministers. We often have them doing unproductive things — and it’s really no surprise that the church isn’t growing given how poorly our ministerial time (and member time!) is allocated. Continue reading

The Holy Spirit: John’s Gospel, Jesus’ Departing Lesson

Just before the crucifixion, John includes a lengthy discourse by Jesus to his disciples in preparation for the coming changes. Among the major themes of the discourse is the coming Holy Spirit of God. The meal at which the discourse occurs is with the “disciples,” and is not necessarily with just the 12 apostles, although they were certainly present.

(John 14:16-17 ESV)  16 And I will ask the Father, and he will give you another Helper, to be with you forever,  17 even the Spirit of truth, whom the world cannot receive, because it neither sees him nor knows him. You know him, for he dwells with you and will be in you. Continue reading

Church Finances and Business: Update on the Housing Allowance

https://i2.wp.com/www.sxc.hu/pic/m/s/sv/svilen001/966070_mortgage_and_money_6.jpg?resize=179%2C179I need to pass along two bits of news on the “housing allowance” ministers of the gospel are allowed to exclude from their federal taxable income.

Background

The Internal Revenue Code allows ministers of the gospel to exclude from their gross income the amount of their pay designated as a housing allowance, but only up to their actual cost of obtaining housing and only if the pay is earned as part of their ministry. This is, of course, a huge tax benefit and helps countless ministers and missionaries.

I go over this in more detail in these earlier posts:

Church Finances and Business: Further on the Housing Allowance

PLR 201023008 (Feb. 26, 2010)

The IRS has released a recent private letter ruling finding that employees of a church-sponsored orphanage qualify for the housing allowance if they are ministers of the gospel. Continue reading
