Too True

But minivans are still minivans.

Clergy & Laity: If he’d ever had a real job, he’d know how unrealistic his preaching is!

https://i0.wp.com/1.bp.blogspot.com/_bLBPZAiyuwA/SQkMldOkY5I/AAAAAAAAAJY/FlxoD65cNcE/s400/clerical_collar_9.jpg?resize=179%2C179This is a tough one. One great advantage of having a fulltime preacher is that they are fulltime. Of course. But this is also a disadvantage because it gives the members the opportunity to rationalize away the preacher’s demands. After all, the member’s lives are often radically different from the life led by the preacher.

How many members can spend the first two hours of their work day in prayer? Not any. Not all preachers have this privilege, but many do.

Clergy & Laity: Thoughts on the Last Post, Part 2 (Accountability)

https://i0.wp.com/1.bp.blogspot.com/_bLBPZAiyuwA/SQkMldOkY5I/AAAAAAAAAJY/FlxoD65cNcE/s400/clerical_collar_9.jpg?resize=179%2C179Should the minister be accountable to the elders for how he uses his time? Accountable for results only? Not accountable at all?

Well, let’s start with some principles.

Principle 1: People fill gaps in their knowledge in the most pathological way possible.

Learn this one. It’s important. Humans fill gaps in their knowledge with their fears. When a husband forgets to call his wife when his plane lands, she imagines that he died in a plane crash. When the elders refuse to answer what their position is on issue X, the members imagine that their position is whatever they most fear. If the elders don’t review the youth minister at least annually, he’ll worry whether they are preparing to fire him. If the elders fire the preacher and don’t give a reason, the church will assume it’s for evil, nefarious reasons, even though they can’t imagine why the elders would do such a thing. Clergy & Laity: Thoughts on the Last Post, Part 1 (The Preacher Pattern)

https://i0.wp.com/1.bp.blogspot.com/_bLBPZAiyuwA/SQkMldOkY5I/AAAAAAAAAJY/FlxoD65cNcE/s400/clerical_collar_9.jpg?resize=179%2C179As I expected, the readers’ comments on the last post in this series have been insightful, helpful, and utterly inconsistent with each other. The inconsistency is entirely understandable, as I feel a bit conflicted myself. And I admit to a certain prejudice, being a practicing lawyer who has to keep up with his time. I hate it.

Hmm …

The pattern for preachers

Let’s start with the Biblical basis for the ministerial system. Continue reading

The Holy Spirit: The Synoptic Gospels, Part 3

Missionaries

(Mat 10:16-22 ESV)  16 “Behold, I am sending you out as sheep in the midst of wolves, so be wise as serpents and innocent as doves. 17 Beware of men, for they will deliver you over to courts and flog you in their synagogues, 18 and you will be dragged before governors and kings for my sake, to bear witness before them and the Gentiles. 19 When they deliver you over, do not be anxious how you are to speak or what you are to say, for what you are to say will be given to you in that hour. 20 For it is not you who speak, but the Spirit of your Father speaking through you. 21 Brother will deliver brother over to death, and the father his child, and children will rise against parents and have them put to death, 22 and you will be hated by all for my name’s sake. But the one who endures to the end will be saved.

(Compare Mark 13:9 ff; Luke 12:10 ff). Continue reading

The Holy Spirit: The Synoptic Gospels, Summary

The synoptic Gospels, especially Matthew, begin and end with the Spirit. They are centered on Jesus, but the Spirit nonetheless permeates their narratives.

The Spirit conceives Jesus. The Spirit inspires prophets to glorify God in announcing the birth of the Savior. The Spirit descends on the baptized Jesus to demonstrate God’s anointing.

The Spirit leads Jesus into the wilderness to be tempted, and the Spirit empowers Jesus to do miracles. Jesus declares that the Spirit’s role is such that blasphemy against the Spirit cannot be forgiven.

The Spirit empowers the missionaries sent by Jesus, and the Spirit gives joy in their successes.

Jesus concludes his ministry by telling his disciple to baptize in the name of the Father, Son, and Holy Spirit.

The Gospels are about Jesus, but much of the narrative is driven by the Spirit, because the Spirit’s role is to bring glory to Jesus.

The Glory and the Spirit

[I meant to post this before the posts on the Gospels, but I got distracted by vacation and such.]

Clouds of glory

This lesson begins on top of Mt. Sinai. Moses was called by God to the top of the mountain to receive the Law of Moses.

(Exo. 24:15-17) When Moses went up on the mountain, the cloud covered it, and the glory of the LORD settled on Mount Sinai. For six days the cloud covered the mountain, and on the seventh day the LORD called to Moses from within the cloud. To the Israelites the glory of the LORD looked like a consuming fire on top of the mountain.

This is what the songs mean by “clouds of glory.” Continue reading

On Translations

Product Details A reader sent me an email asking about my increasing preference for the English Standard Version (ESV). I kept meaning to say something about this, but I just never could get around it. Anyway …

I’ve been a fan of the ESV ever since it came out in 2001 (updated in 2007 and 2008). It typically does a much better job of translating Paul than the NIV because it’s generally truer to the original language, while managing to be quite readable. I started my transition in the last few months using BibleGateway, even though QuickVerse for Windows 95 (my primary software aid at the time) didn’t offer that version. Continue reading

Clergy & Laity: What does the preacher do for a living? How many hours does he really work?

https://i0.wp.com/1.bp.blogspot.com/_bLBPZAiyuwA/SQkMldOkY5I/AAAAAAAAAJY/FlxoD65cNcE/s400/clerical_collar_9.jpg?resize=179%2C179Part 1: The annual review

It’s the new preacher’s first annual review. The elders are trying hard to be wise and godly, but it’s a business-sort of meeting that’s about business sorts of things.

The minister has performed well in his first year on the job. Attendance is up, and the sermons are good. People still occasionally thank the elders for hiring such a good man.

But the economy is in the tank, and contributions aren’t so good. There are programs to fund, repairs to be made, payments due, and something has to give. Meanwhile, the preacher is asking for a raise!

The elders aren’t really sure how to respond. How can they justify giving the man a raise when contributions are down? Continue reading
