Reflections on a Disfellowshipped Reader

As I mentioned in the last post on this topic, 95% of the Churches of Christ would not have treated the reader so severely. However, I think this sort of conduct is going to become more common — not less. After all, their behavior is logical, given the false assumptions they start with — and lots of Churches of Christ share their starting assumptions. They just aren’t as ruthlessly logical in carrying them out.

You see, it all goes back to the ridiculous notion that violating a silence of scripture damns. I mean, we come up with some very questionable “logic” to conclude that instrumental music (or fellowship halls or church buses) are somehow sinful, and then we just leap to the conclusion that the sin necessarily damns, as though all sin damns. It’s absurd. And yet it’s what a lot of Churches of Christ teach. At least as to instrumental music, it’s the editorial position of every theological print periodical we have — other than the Restoration Quarterly. Continue reading

Renewing Our Worship: Emailed Announcements, Part 3

Another short one:

The Open House Party for Paul Smith is from 2:00 to 5:00 this Sunday, February 1. We will shower him with gift cards so he can purchase what he needs for his new home. Everyone is welcome to attend and celebrate with Paul.

Paul Smith was working on the roof of his house when he slipped and fell to the ground, becoming paralyzed from the waste down. He, of course, lost his job and soon found himself unable to pay his insurance. And then his house burned to the ground. Continue reading

Letter to a Disfellowshipped Reader: Thanks

When I received the email from my disfellowshipped reader, I wrote her, saying, “I have some thoughts, but I find the readers often have wisdom that would never have occurred to me.” And, boy, was I right!

I was hoping for a large response, because I figured she’d be more encouraged with comments from a host of readers. And, boy, did you readers respond!

Thanks.

Letter to a Disfellowshipped Reader

Dear Reader,

I’m glad you chose to write me because I love being amazed at the courage and faithfulness of God’s children. I mean, I’m just astonished that you’ve managed not only to extricate you from a horrible situation, but you’ve done so with Christ-like grace. Most people would want to lash out, to retaliate, but you’ve been selfless and forgiving. It’s obvious who is bearing the image of Christ — and who are not.

So here’s my advice: don’t go back. DON’T GO BACK. You were right to leave. Continue reading

Renewing Our Worship: Emailed Announcements, Part 2

These next two are short announcements, but they have great stories behind them —

Relief Team Coming Through: A team on their way to work in Mississippi will spend the night in our building this Saturday. If you will assist with a meal for them, please contact Sandy Campbell at …

Ever since the devastation of Hurricane Katrina, Churches of Christ from across the country have been traveling to the Gulf Coast to help clean up and rebuild. We happen to be on Interstate 59, which is the road to New Orleans and the Mississippi coast. And on a regular basis, churches come through town to do relief work. When they do, many spend the night in our building, which is not really set up as a hotel. But it does have showers and a kitchen. Continue reading

A Reader’s Email about Being Disfellowshipped

I get emails. This tragic email is lengthy but important. A reader wants to know how to respond to having been disfellowshipped. Readers, what do you think?

(Edited for length and privacy. Posted and edited with permission.)

Hello,

I have been reading and studying your website for some time now. First, let me say it has been very edifying and uplifting. It has cleared up many issues I’ve had and helped me find some peace in an chaotic time in my life. Thank You.

Second, I would like to get some advice on the practice of disfellowship in some conservative Churches of Christ. Continue reading

Renewing Our Worship: Emailed Announcements, Part 1

In an earlier post, I mentioned how important announcements are to our worship: they fulfill the injunction of Heb 10:24-25 to spur one another on to love and good works. And lately I’ve received some very encouraging announcements from my church via email. I thought I’d share a selection.

Now, I have virtually nothing to do with any of the good works these announcements deal with. I’m not bragging on myself. I just have the pleasure of watching God’s Spirit moving through his church to transform lives.

God has given my church some extraordinary people who minister with great power. But I think every church has such people. Now these leaders aren’t leaders because of theological degrees or professional credentials. They’re not leaders because they’ve been made deacons or elders. They are leaders because God gave them a heart for people in need and the talents to serve others. And we elders, well, our job is to encourage and support them, but mainly, it’s to get out of their way. Continue reading

It’s Snowing!!

Here in Tuscaloosa, we get snow about once every 10 years. What little snow we get is usually melted by 8 o’clock. But today we have sure-enough snow!! And it’s 10 and the snow is still coming down.

Now, we Southerners are entirely unfamiliar with how to drive in this stuff. We have no chains or snow tires. In fact, the favorite winter sport around here is golf! So we’ve had to cancel church for fear that if we asked people to come they’d get hurt trying to navigate on the ice and snow. (Besides, kids need a chance to play in God’s creation when it’s a once-in-ten-years event).

So here’s a camera-phone photo from my back window (I’m not a kid anymore and have no intention of actually going outside.)

Renewing Our Worship: Authenticity

If you read the literature on reaching Postmodern people and young people, you’ll find a huge emphasis on “authenticity” in our worship. If you read older material on worship, you’ll find that “authenticity” is not a new concept. It’s just begun to receive a much greater emphasis because those outside the church have come to value authenticity so very much.

The first few times I ran into the word, I was perplexed as to its meaning in this context. I mean, an “authentic” Rembrandt is a painting by Rembrandt that is not a forgery. And so I took “authentic” to mean “not fake.” But no one has ever argued for fake worship or fake Christianity. I knew that those bandying the word about had something deeper in mind, but I struggled to understand what was being said.

Finally, I figured it out, not from church growth literature but from two stories I’ve been told. Continue reading
