The Future of the Progressive Churches of Christ: Regarding Our Periodicals

cooperation.jpgJoe wrote,

Wine Skins and Grace Centered Magazine are good places to start. Sometimes the Christian Chronicle. Though of late I am disgusted.

Here is my advice: be willing to look outside the churches of Christ.

I’m frankly trying to figure all three of these periodicals out myself. Continue reading

MDR: Divorce in Biblical times, Part 2

That “divorce” in the Bible refers to breaking the marriage, rather than going to court, is easily confirmed by looking at the words the writers use to described what some versions translate as “divorce”:

Verse

KJV translation

NIV translation

1 Cor. 7:10 “depart” “separate”
1 Cor. 7:11 & 12 “put away” “divorce”
1 Cor. 7:13 “leave” “divorce”
1 Cor. 7:15 “depart” “leaves”
1 Cor. 7:27 “be loosed” “divorce”
Matt. 5:31&32 “put away” “divorce”

The Future of the Progressive Churches of Christ: On Picking a Church

cooperation.jpgI get emails. This is edited for anonymity as it was sent to me privately. But the question is important enough I thought I’d post it —

I have greatly enjoyed reading your blog. Very exciting stuff! My husband and I and our children live in [a small, growing town]. We want a church here in our community like the one you talk about.

We have a Church of Christ here — a very small, old congregation that is in a time warp. Continue reading

MDR: Divorce in Biblical times, Part 1

As confused as our understanding of marriage has been, divorce is even more confusing. For example, today, when we say “divorce” we conjure up an image of filing papers in a local court asking a judge to declare a state-granted marriage terminated. But the interesting question is whether this is what the authors of the Bible thought. Clearly, it is not.[1]

In the Old Testament, while marriage goes back to Adam and Eve, no reference to divorce is found until the Law of Moses. Continue reading

On Slowing Down: The Second Sleep Apnea Test

Well, it’s been an interesting last few days. After my miserable sleep apnea test, the sleep technician who watched me sleep all night (that must have been great fun) assured me I didn’ t have sleep apnea — which was good news because I couldn’t bear the thought of having to go back to that place to be re-tested — which is what happens if you actually have sleep apnea.

A few days later, a nurse called to tell me that I indeed did have sleep apnea, a mild case, and she scheduled me to come back for a second sleep study. Yuck! In this study, they’d put a CPAP machine on me and see whether I can tolerate it and what settings work best for me.

So I asked my friend Allen, who’s been through this all before, what the second test would be like, and in all sincerity, he assured me that it was much, much worse than the first! He tried to comfort me, assuring me that in two or three weeks, I’d be fine with the new equipment. This was not comforting at all. I told Allen that I didn’t have any of these problems before I’d met him and so I figured I caught sleep apnea from him. Continue reading

The Future of the Progressive Churches of Christ: The Christian Standard Weighs In (Fifth Question)

cooperation.jpgWe were once known as a “people of the Book.” Have we become a people of methodology?

The Standard writes,

If we neglect our heritage and if we fail to teach sound doctrine, will our legacy be a generation that denies both?

It’s a deep and important question. And it’s too easy to blow it off by noting that our long insistence on “sound doctrine” has been divisive and ultimately ineffective. True enough, but there are doctrinal issues that matter and matter a lot. Continue reading

MDR: The history of how to get married

Now, having an understanding of the essence of marriage in the minds of Biblical writers, let’s look at how people got married in Biblical times.

When we read the Genesis accounts of how Isaac and Jacob were married, we see no ceremony at all. Rather, the man and woman simply chose to be married, with the consent of the bride’s father, as required by ancient custom, and they began to live together as husband and wife. Continue reading

The Future of the Progressive Churches of Christ: The Christian Standard Weighs In (Fourth Question, part 2)

cooperation.jpgIn the last post, we considered whether we should preserve the best of our heritage as Restoration Movement churches. Of course, we should. The hard part is figuring out what’s best. What doctrines are so important that we should have separate universities and separate mission efforts to preserve them, despite realizing that these are not salvation issues?

Here’s my opinion, for whatever it’s worth —

1. As the Campbells taught, faith in Jesus, including his Lordship, saves believers and establishes fellowship. We start here because the Bible starts here. Continue reading

MDR: The Biblical model for marriage

As we study divorce and remarriage today, our understanding is colored not only by the scriptures that address the issues, but also our own culture and history-religious and civil. It will help if we go back to the beginning.[1]

(Gen. 1:27) So God created man in his own image, in the image of God he created him; male and female he created them. God blessed them and said to them, “Be fruitful and increase in number; fill the earth and subdue it. Rule over the fish of the sea and the birds of the air and over every living creature that moves on the ground.”

When God created the heavens and earth, he created man as both male and female, and specifically intended that they “be fruitful,” that is, have children. The sexual joining of husband and wife was part of God’s plan in Eden — before sin entered the world. Continue reading

The Future of the Progressive Churches of Christ: The Christian Standard Weighs In (Fourth Question, part 1)

cooperation.jpgHow does our current historical amnesia affect the vitality of the Restoration Movement institutions? Should we care?

The Standard asks,

If megachurches and new churches are a prophetic whisper of who we are becoming, are we making ourselves vulnerable as a movement by not expecting them to preserve and teach the best of our heritage and demonstrate family loyalty? Continue reading
