Surprised by Hell: The Old Testament

The Old Testament says very little about hell or the fate of the wicked. However, when the question is squarely addressed, the scriptures teach the utter destruction of the wicked.

Consider Psalm 37 —

(Psa 37) Of David. Do not fret because of evil men or be envious of those who do wrong; 2 for like the grass they will soon wither, like green plants they will soon die away. …

9 For evil men will be cut off, but those who hope in the LORD will inherit the land. 10 A little while, and the wicked will be no more; though you look for them, they will not be found. … Continue reading

Surprised by Hell: Degrees of Punishment

It’s been argued that God cannot destroy the damned as the Bible predicts degrees of punishment for the lost.

(Mat 10:15) I tell you the truth, it will be more bearable for Sodom and Gomorrah on the day of judgment than for that town.

(Mat 16:27) For the Son of Man is going to come in his Father’s glory with his angels, and then he will reward each person according to what he has done.

(Luke 12:47-48 ) “That servant who knows his master’s will and does not get ready or does not do what his master wants will be beaten with many blows. 48 But the one who does not know and does things deserving punishment will be beaten with few blows. From everyone who has been given much, much will be demanded; and from the one who has been entrusted with much, much more will be asked.” Continue reading

Surprised by Hell: A Heavenly Time

Alan keeps asking these fascinating questions.

If time is a feature of this creation, and souls of the dead live outside this creation, then by definition they do not experience time. So they are eternal. Perhaps they can observe creation (and therefore can observe all points in time). It’s hard to imagine how anything would be temporary in a realm where there is no time.

I think it’s clearly true that the time we experience is a feature of this creation. However, that doesn’t mean there’s no time in heaven. It’s just that time in heaven is quite independent of time on earth. Here’s a story that may illustrate the point — Continue reading

Surprised by Hell: Eternity

I think this is going to be our last word study. I just want to be sure that “eternal” doesn’t necessarily mean “everlasting,” as it’s so often translated.

We need to quickly run through several of the verses speaking in terms of things “eternal” or aionios. The point is to demonstrate that aionios refers to the next age but not necessarily to everlasting.

(Mark 3:29) But whoever blasphemes against the Holy Spirit will never be forgiven; he is guilty of an eternal sin.”

Now, Jesus plainly isn’t saying that this sin is an everlasting sin. Rather, the consequences of the sin will be everlasting. The sin will be with us even into the next age, where it will truly matter. Continue reading

Surprised by Hell: Eternal Fire

We continue our word study by looking at some of the many passages that speak of the damned being sent to the lake of fire, eternal fire, or the like.

Fire

(2 Pet 3:7) By the same word the present heavens and earth are reserved for fire, being kept for the day of judgment and destruction of ungodly men.

Once again, Peter says it plainly. This destruction is by fire — the same fire that destroys the present heavens and earth. He specifically joins the burning of the present heavens and earth with the destruction of the ungodly. Continue reading

At Last, I’m a Change Agent

The Answering the Church of Christ blog has me listed under “Change Agents,” which is the highlight of my day. I think it’s meant as a compliment, which is great, as co-opting the term as complimentary is altogether good. I mean, I really am pushing for change. I’m glad someone noticed.

Surprised by Hell: Mortality and Immortality

As we continue our word studies, we next take on the verses dealing with immortality.

Immortality

One element of the conditionalist position is that immortality is not an inherent element of human life. Rather, immortality is something God gives to those who are faithful —

(1 Tim 6:15-16) which God will bring about in his own time — God, the blessed and only Ruler, the King of kings and Lord of lords, 16 who alone is immortal and who lives in unapproachable light, whom no one has seen or can see. To him be honor and might forever. Amen.

And Paul certainly says that only God is immortal. The Greek word is athanasia, meaning deathless. Continue reading

Surprised by Hope: Evangelism — In Response to Readers’ Comments, Part 3

Next consider Paul before Felix —

(Act 24:24-25) Several days later Felix came with his wife Drusilla, who was a Jewess. He sent for Paul and listened to him as he spoke about faith in Christ Jesus. As Paul discoursed on righteousness, self-control and the judgment to come, Felix was afraid and said, “That’s enough for now! You may leave. When I find it convenient, I will send for you.”

Paul’s lesson was “faith in Christ Jesus” and “righteousness, self-control and the judgment.” Continue reading

Surprised by Hell: Eternal Destruction

Although the Gospels speak of the fate of the lost in terms of Gehenna, the epistles use a very different vocabulary. They speak of “death” and “destruction.” We’ll consider here the references to destruction. And there are lots of references!

Now, here’s the point. If the damned exist in everlasting torment, why would their fate be referred to as “destruction” or “death” in nearly every case? Admittedly these could be metaphors for a living death of sorts, but that’s not how the words are used. Rather, they contrast life with death, eternity with destruction.

And the New Testament writers use several different words for “destroy,” as though to make it clear that they mean “destroy.”

On Slowing Down: The Sleep Apnea Test

So I’ve not been sleeping that well, which doesn’t surprise my wife, because I’ve taken up snoring here lately, and she finds it more than a little irritating — as in so irritating that she’s nearly broken my ribs punching me to roll over and stop snoring!  We tried the nasal strip things (“No pest strips”) and they helped. But not enough.

And so I went to an ENT doctor. Now, I put this off as long as I could, because I figured he’d say I have a deviated septum. I’m not sure what that is, but everyone I know who’s been to an ENT doctor comes back with one, leading to lots of blood and cotton stuffed up their noses. Continue reading
