Communion Meditation: Heaven on Earth

Communion2,000 years ago, God saw that heaven and earth were too far apart. God very much wanted to bring heaven down to earth so that all his children could enjoy it, just as he does. And for a moment, this happened.

The price to move heaven to earth was the life of God himself — God the Son. The Son gave everything to make this happen, even surrendering his place in heaven, even descending into the depths of Hades. Continue reading

Quail Springs Church of Christ “Disfellowshipped”: An Invitation

quailsprings.gifI just received this comment —

It’s nice to read some supportive words. We’ve taken the no response route as you have suggested here.

On Thursday, May 1, the National Day of Prayer, we are hosting a joint worship service with at least 2 other churches from OKC – Catedral de Adoracion and Tabitha Baptist. A mostly white suburban Church of Christ, a Latino inner-city church and a black Baptist church coming together to worship and fellowship. Worship teams from all three churches will participate. Communion would be a great addition to the plan.

We’ll invite other churches of Christ and anyone else who would like to come be with us. You’re welcome as well of course.

Grace & peace to you,

Gary Bruce
Worship Minister
Quail Springs Church of Christ

I moved this to a post to make sure everyone sees it and it goes out to RSS feed and email subscribers.

On May 1, I’ll be at the Pepperdine lectureship, where I’ll be speaking on why the Churches of Christ are so divisive (kind of ironic, isn’t it?). I wish I could be in Oklahoma City! I’ll be there in spirit.

Readers, please attend this event! I pray that Quail Springs fills their auditorium, the church next door, the parking lot, and the streets with supportive brothers and sisters in Christ.

You see, those who persecute Quail Springs for worshiping God with an instrument stand opposed to the gospel of Christ. They don’t mean to. But they do. It’s the Galatian heresy — squared. We cannot sit by idly while a spiritual war is being fought by others.

It’s extremely important that the Church of Christ community in Oklahoma see that Quail Springs is supported by others. Elderships of other churches need to know that they can resist the forces of legalism and find support among their members and their sister congregations. If this isn’t worth standing for, what is?

Your brothers and sisters at Quail Springs need to see that they are loved and accepted. Please be there.

The antidote for divisiveness and backbiting is love — openly displayed.

Jay

Leading Change for Ministers, Part 1

change.jpgI’m frequently asked by ministers how to cope with the fact their church desperately needs to change, to escape legalism. Sometimes the elders are uncooperative, even opposed. Sometimes the elders are open to learning.

Now, I’m talking about stuff I don’t know much about. I’ve never worked as a minister of the gospel. My livelihood has never depended on keeping a bunch of elders happy. So forgive me if my perspective is skewed. It likely is.

I don’t think every church can be rescued by the minster’s efforts. But some have been and can be — and I’d never place a limit on what God can accomplish through a good man — and his Spirit. Continue reading

Searching for The Third Way: Predestination, Part 3

three-thumb.jpgThe scriptures that teach predestination

I believe in predestination, because the Bible plainly teaches it. But I do not accept the Calvinist view. Nor do I accept the traditional view of non-Calvinists, such as most Church of Christ scholars.

Rather, I think the answer is found in an alternative approach — a Third Way. Continue reading

Amazing Grace: The Scary Lesson of Galatians, Part 0.5

I’ve been trying to figure out a better way to introduce this difficult teaching to a Sunday school class. Where’s the one key that helps show what Paul is trying to say. Here’s an idea.

grace2.jpgLast week we studied Romans 16 through 14, taking Romans backwards to see whom Paul wanted us to “mark,” that is, to watch out for. It is, as we discussed, those who divide contrary to Paul’s teachings on grace and unity, culminating in Romans 14-15.

Now, class, there were two issues that Paul wrestled with, calling them “disputable matters” — eating meat and holy days.

And what did Paul say was the right answer on the “holy day” question? Well, he didn’t give an answer. No, actually he did. He said that we shouldn’t judge or condemn those who disagree with us. And he told the Romans to be “convinced in their own minds” even though they disagree with one another.

Now some say that the holy day question was a matter of indifference. But I want you to consider what Paul said about holy days in Galatians. Continue reading

Quail Springs Church of Christ “Disfellowshipped”: A Bone-chilling Thought

quailsprings.gifToday is one of those nasty, winter days when it’s not cold enough to snow, not warm enough to be outside, too wet to want to get out of your car, and too windy to keep your umbrella over your head. Yuck.

And so I wasn’t surprised to feel a cold shiver as I drove to work this morning. I was pondering the state of the Churches of Christ as evidenced by this Quail Springs thing, when I realized that the lessons I’ve been posting come together to produce a bone-chilling conclusion. I’d been in my car for a while, and it was actually quite warm in there. The chill was from the thought, not the air.

This is kind of hard to explain. You’ve got to start by reading the last two posts on Galatians. Continue reading

Amazing Grace: The Scary Lesson of Galatians, Part 2 (edited)

grace2.jpgThis is a series of lessons designed for the classroom, so I’ve got to limit myself somewhat. I promised myself I’d do only 2 posts on Galatians, because I only want to do 2 classes on Galatians, and so I just can’t fit it all in. For the full argument, read Do We Teach Another Gospel?.

Conclusions from Galatians

The conclusions we are to draw from Galatians are laid out plainly enough in Galatians 5.

(Gal. 5:4) You who are trying to be justified by law have been alienated from Christ; you have fallen away from grace.

Conclusion: You’d have to be crazy to try to be justified by law! Remember, that Paul often uses “law” as shorthand for “works of law,” which is what he means here. Don’t try to earn your salvation! Continue reading

Amazing Grace: The Scary Lesson of Galatians, Part 1 (edited)

[I’ve been re-posting these lessons as I edit them for the adult classes we’re teaching at my home congregation. I’ve accelerated re-posting these two lessons on Galatians by a week or two because of their relevance to the Quail Springs controversy.]

grace2.jpgActually, I’m being quite literal here: Galatians scares me. A lot. A whole lot. You see, I’m worried for the salvation of many of my friends because of what I read in Galatians.

The gist of Galatians is this: You are insisting that your members be circumcised — not for health or cultural reasons but to be saved. Those who aren’t circumcised, you treat as not Christians at all.

Not only is this a misunderstanding of the gospel, it destroys the gospel. You cannot teach this and be saved. You see, if you try to be saved by your own merit — by what work you do — then you have to keep the entire law of God. You have to be perfect! And no one can do that. (5:1-5:7)

Therefore, there is no mixing faith with law. You must ask God to save you by faith in Jesus or by your merits. But mixing the two is not allowed! Add any law to faith as a condition of salvation, then you’ve rejected faith and agreed to be judged by law, and as a result, you’re damned. You’re fallen from grace. You’re alienated from Christ. You sought salvation through a different gospel. (1:6-8). Continue reading

Quail Springs Church of Christ “Disfellowshipped”: A Question

quailsprings.gifIs anyone aware of a Church of Christ minister or author who considers instrumental music a sin who has publicly condemned the ad published in the Oklahoman declaring the minister at Quail Springs disfellowshipped because his congregation added an instrumental service?

I’m just wondering if the instrumental-music-is-a-sin element within the Churches has developed such a bunker mentality that they’d rather be silent in the face of obvious sin than show the “liberals” a divided front. And I’m wondering whether truth has become political for us.

I think it’s an important test of our principles and am hoping for some good news.

Lessons on Grace: How Grace Unites (or Romans taught backwards)

[This is the next lesson in the Amazing Grace series posted some time ago. I’m re-posting because its importance to the Quail Springs situation.]

grace2.jpgOne of the most illuminating studies I’ve ever done was reading Romans backwards–just starting with the conclusions at the end and then seeing how Paul got to them.

In the earlier lesson on Romans we stopped at chapter 8, mainly because of lack of space (and to avoid overly testing your patience), which is what we do in Bible class most of the time. It’s just nearly impossible to get past chapter 8 in a 13-week quarter. As a result, we often never get all the way to the conclusions!

Chapter 16

And so, just to be sure we get the conclusions, we’re going to start in chapter 16 and work backwards. Continue reading
