Upgrading a Church of Christ Worship Service Without Buying a Guitar

angelharp1.jpgUnder the guidance of our present worship minister, things have gotten pretty good. I know this is true because —

* No one is complaining much about the worship,

* The numbers are up, and

* Some people wish the service was longer!

Anyway, since we’re on the subject of worship, and since I really think churches can do a lot better with their a cappella singing, I thought I’d address the topic of how to make things better– without buying a guitar. Continue reading

Church Growth: Worship

churchgrowthl.jpgOkay. For Churches of Christ, this is a touchy subject. But we get nowhere being in denial. It’s time to consider the impact of how we worship on church growth.

According to the research of Thumma and Travis, the number one statistical indicator of which churches grew most rapidly in the last 5 years is whether the members consider the worship “exciting” and “informal.”

An important correlation is that these same churches also had the most members involved in converting new members. The question is why? You can’t help but figure that the likelihood of members inviting friends to your church depends heavily on the excitement and informality of the worship! Continue reading

Wineskins is Free At Last!

wineskins.jpg

Wineskins in now available for free at http://www.wineskins.org/!

For those of you not familiar with this publication, it’s one of the few periodicals targeted to the progressive movement within the Churches of Christ. It was once a print magazine, but stopped printing several years and became a subscription internet service. But now it’s free.

The most important other internet “magazine” targeted to the progressive movement is Grace Centered Magazine.

Both are well worth the read. You can subscribe to Wineskins using an RSS feed (such as through Google Reader) or else by free email subscription. Grace Centered Magazine has no RSS feed but updates are available by free email.

Church Growth: The Crowd

churchgrowthl.jpgThe “Crowd” is a term likely coined by Rick Warren in The Purpose Driven Church. Thumma and Travis find in their research that the way a church deals with the Crowd is likely the most telling characteristic of a megachurch. In their research, it’s the most powerful driver of church growth.

All churches have a Crowd — its the people who attend who aren’t really a part of things. They may be believers. Or not. They may be just checking the congregation out. Some may be very regular in their attendance. But the Crowd isn’t really involved in the life of the church. Continue reading

Index Revised

star.jpgYou may have noticed that the top of the page is changed. No longer are my various books listed. Instead, there’s just a link to “Books by Jay.”

You’ll also notice that the Index is shortened. It had gotten so long (pages and pages) that it was getting hard to find things. Therefore, the old Index is divided into a several sub-indices.

As a result, the Pages box to the right is now a lot longer! You don’t really need to go to the Index. You can just go over to Pages box, find the general topic, click, and find yourself at a sub-index for that topic.

You can also get to the books this way. They each have an entry in the Pages box.

It should make searching the blog easier and quicker. I know it makes it easier for me to update it.

Student missionaries trapped in Kenya

kenya.jpgI’m sure many of you have heard of the civil unrest in Kenya. Several visitors from out of the country are trapped because the airport is shut down due to the violence.

Among those trapped is a student group mission group from the Texas A&M Church of Christ campus ministry. Here’s a story from USA Today. And here’s one from The Christian Chronicle.

You should also read this note posted on John Dobbs’ blog.

Please keep them in your prayers.

(Thanks to David for bringing this to my attention.)

Church Growth: Leadership Styles

churchgrowthl.jpgIn Beyond Megachurch Myths, Thumma and Travis summarize some of their findings regarding how the members perceive their church.

[M]egachurches were far more likely than smaller churches to agree that their congregations welcomed innovation and change, dealt openly with disagreements and conflicts, were excited about the church’s future, easily incorporated new people into the church, and had a clear sense of mission and purpose. … When the survey respondents … were asked to describe the leadership style of their senior minister, 62 percent chose the description “inspires people to take action,” while 17 percent chose “take charge,” and 12 percent said the pastor “acts on goals.”

The authors do not, by any means, consider this a definitive list of what makes churches grow, but it’s a valuable observation. Continue reading

Church Growth: Thoughts on Advertising

churchgrowthl-thumb.jpgAfter my post on Details and the Devil, I think I need to clarify my thoughts on advertising. In fact, we recently had a budget meeting where a proposal was made for us to spend $60,000 year on advertising. It didn’t pass.

We were told by a professional in marketing that this is what an effective ad campaign would cost. And so, I’ve been thinking about advertising. (And who couldn’t be thinking about advertising when they broadcast more ads than football during the Sugar Bowl?!)

1. I think most advertising is wasted money and, more importantly, contrary to the mission the church. When we give up trying to steal members from other churches, the whole concept has to be rethought and a lot of advertising becomes pointless. Continue reading

Research Materials

bible.jpgI’ve added a page with a list of Bible research materials I like to use. I was organizing my Favorites and thought I should share my discoveries.

The information available for free is amazing. Now, if I could just find a decent contemporary online commentary …
