May Peace Be Widespread

by Christopher Tin, from “Calling All Dawns.”

Kia hora te Marino is an ancient Maori prayer spoken by their seamen before a journey. In English it means “May Peace Be Widespread” —

Kia hora te marino
kia whakapapa pounamu te moana
kia tere te karohirohi
i mua i tou huarahi
Haere e tama haere

Let peace be widespread
Let the sea glisten like the greenstone
May your path be straight
Like the flight of the dove
Go in peace and with my blessings

  1. Jay, this took me back to the time I spent in New Zealand (1963-71) and the Maori culture I learned to love there.

  2. John says:

PEACE…if only Christians desired it more. Christians claim to want peace; but their thinking runs, and I am borrowing and paraphrasing a line from the movie Ben Hur, until all want peace we must keep our swords sharpened.
Most in the mainline Church of Christ would be surprisd to learn that the most conservative wing of the CoC, the "One-Cup wing",does not believe a Christian can fight in war, or even belong to the military. Mention it in the next Bible class and see how many looks of puzzlement you recieve. However, there was a time when many in the mainline CoC objected to participating in war. This has changed severely.
Truth is,many Christ loving individuals serve in the armed forces and they, like myself, must stand before God with their own conscience. But I do pray for the time when "just wars" are very, very few and far between, rather than a label slapped onto any war that is waged to mold a culture into our image.
