The Millennium, Part 3

Verse-by-verse

Verses 1-3

(Rev 20:1-3 ESV) Then I saw an angel coming down from heaven, holding in his hand the key to the bottomless pit and a great chain.  2 And he seized the dragon, that ancient serpent, who is the devil and Satan, and bound him for a thousand years,  3 and threw him into the pit, and shut it and sealed it over him, so that he might not deceive the nations any longer, until the thousand years were ended. After that he must be released for a little while.

How long is 1,000 years? Well, most time indicators in the Revelation are symbolic, and we can’t just assume that 1,000 years is literal, when so many other numbers are not. And the rest of the scriptures make no mention of a 1,000-year reign. Rather, we find the 1,000-year reign in Jewish and Zoroastrian speculations. Continue reading

The Naked Gospel: Two Stories: The Invisible Passage

Image: Strip club supporters protest against churchIn the last post of this series, I offered up 1 Cor 5:9-12 as being of critical importance to the questions posed in earlier posts. And while there have been several comments on these posts since then, nothing has been said about this passage. And I think that demonstrates the truth of my suggestion that this passage is “invisible to us.”

(1Co 5:9-12 ESV)  9 I wrote to you in my letter not to associate with sexually immoral people — 10 not at all meaning the sexually immoral of this world, or the greedy and swindlers, or idolaters, since then you would need to go out of the world. 11 But now I am writing to you not to associate with anyone who bears the name of brother if he is guilty of sexual immorality or greed, or is an idolater, reviler, drunkard, or swindler — not even to eat with such a one. 12 For what have I to do with judging outsiders? Is it not those inside the church whom you are to judge?

Let’s consider the principles that Paul is teaching here. The context is a church member engaging in an incestuous relationship. Paul insists that the church must disfellowship him. But he writes vv. 9 -12 to make clear that his command to disfellowship the sexually immoral Christian does not apply more generally — that is, it doesn’t apply to non-Christians. Continue reading

The Naked Gospel: Two Stories: Another Observation

Image: Strip club supporters protest against churchSo far, no one has mentioned the passage I consider central to the discussion —

This passages bears analysis at at least four levels — Continue reading

Elders: The Care and Feeding of Elders in a Progressive Congregation: Building the Relationship

* Ask to meet regularly — as regularly as the elders will permit

Ministers are busy (or should be). They have deadlines and commitments. They often resent time spent in meetings, especially in meetings with elders. After all, a meeting with the elders is just one more chance for the elders to interfere.

Obviously, to be in a collaborative relationship, ministers have to get over this and invite the elders to meetings. Yes, collaboration gives up some autonomy, but autonomy is not a scriptural model. We belong to each other, and elders have an obligation to serve the ministers and ministries by sharing their experience and wisdom — humbly and collaboratively. Continue reading

The Naked Gospel: Two Stories: An Observation

Image: Strip club supporters protest against churchHere’s an interesting comparison.

A post about strippers and the gospel, raising questions about how to evangelize those who are very far removed from Christian morality, gets 3 comments. Meanwhile, the two posts on Col 3:16 and instrumental music get 160 comments. Could this mean that we in the Churches of Christ remain a bit overly focused on our internal disputes?

I mean, I thought sure I could garner some comment traffic by saying “naked” and “stripper” in the same post! But evidently we find the a cappella music question more interesting by far.

So I’m not going to express my views on Stories 1 and 2 just yet. Rather, I leave for the readers the questions —

1. Is the church in Story 1 right? Unwise? Or guilty of sin?
2. Is the church in Story 2 right? Unwise? Or guilty of sin?

Bikini-clad strippers protest church in rural Ohio

Dancers counter congregants who have picketed the club where they work

On Sunday, four of The Fox Hole’s seven strippers and more than a dozen supporters garnered both scorn and compassion from churchgoers — and quite a few honks from pickup trucks and other passing vehicles. Continue reading

The Millennium, Part 2

The 1,000-year reign can’t refer to an earthly kingdom

(John 18:36 ESV)  36 Jesus answered, “My kingdom is not of this world. If my kingdom were of this world, my servants would have been fighting, that I might not be delivered over to the Jews. But my kingdom is not from the world.”

(Dan 2:44 ESV) And in the days of those kings the God of heaven will set up a kingdom that shall never be destroyed, nor shall the kingdom be left to another people. It shall break in pieces all these kingdoms and bring them to an end, and it shall stand forever,

Jesus declares plainly that the kingdom is not an earthly kingdom. And Daniel’s prophecy of the kingdom is clear that the kingdom to be established at the time of the Romans will last forever. There won’t be a second earthly kingdom that replaces the original spiritual kingdom. Nor do any of the numerous Old Testament prophecies about the kingdom speak of a transition from a spiritual kingdom to an earthly kingdom. Continue reading

Joe, Bobby, and Nick: The Best of the Best

-317806d15e1023b3_custom_665xauto

As much fun as winning yesterday’s game against Penn State was — and it was a LOT of fun — it was a special thrill to have Joe Paterno and Bobby Bowden on the field named after Paul “Bear” Bryant meeting with Nick Saban. Very exciting stuff for us old-time college football fans.

Coach Saban told Paterno, “You’re the best.” Of course, he said this as he was beating Joe Pa’s team 24-3, but he meant it. One down year does not change the standard set by Joe Paterno.

Meanwhile, Alabama handily defeats the 11th ranked team, with its best offensive player — Heisman winner Mark Ingram — and two of its best defensive players out of the game.

And, by the way, I was there! The atmosphere on campus at Alabama is undescribable for a big game like Penn State.

Ephesians 1:7-10, Part 3 (Unity)

Ruins of Celsus Library in Ephesus

(Eph 1:7-10 ESV) 7 In him we have redemption through his blood, the forgiveness of our trespasses, according to the riches of his grace,  8 which he lavished upon us, in all wisdom and insight  9 making known to us the mystery of his will, according to his purpose, which he set forth in Christ  10 as a plan for the fullness of time, to unite all things in him, things in heaven and things on earth.

This is the text I studied with my class this morning. As is so often the case, the lesson taught was not the lesson prepared. The emphasis this morning was on —

to unite all things in him, things in heaven and things on earth. Continue reading

Elders: The Care and Feeding of Elders in a Progressive Congregation: Defining the Relationship

* If the elders haven’t said, the ministers should ask the elders what their relationship should be.

I think the relationship between ministers and elders should be defined and stated. Some elders fall into the habit of treating ministers as mere employees to receive orders with no input. Others let the ministers run free, only intervening when the ministers violate some unspoken hot button issue. Much of this would be avoided by first defining in a broad sense what their relationship ought to be.

Now, I’m not saying it’s the ministers’ fault if their relationship isn’t defined. I’d urge the elders to be the first to take this step. If their relationship is not defined, it’s both their faults. Continue reading
