Amazing Grace/Churches of Christ in Decline?: Rescuing the Churches of Christ, Part 3

grace2.jpgXI. Why can’t an established church have the same success as a church plant?

A. Established churches have many advantages

1. A building. Church plants have to rent space, with all the obvious inconveniences.

2. Elders and deacons

3. Lots of members

4. Children’s and teen programs

B. But they have disadvantages Continue reading

Buried Talents: 1 Peter, “Co-heirs of Grace”

We next note 1 Peter 2:11-3:7, a passage very similar to Ephesians 5:

Dear friends, I urge you, as aliens and strangers in the world, to abstain from sinful desires, which war against your soul. Live such good lives among the pagans that, though they accuse you of doing wrong, they may see your good deeds and glorify God on the day he visits us. Submit yourselves for the Lord’s sake to every authority instituted among men: whether to the king, as the supreme authority, or to governors, who are sent by him to punish those who do wrong and to commend those who do right. For it is God’s will that by doing good you should silence the ignorant talk of foolish men. Live as free men, but do not use your freedom as a cover-up for evil; live as servants of God. Show proper respect to everyone: Love the brotherhood of believers, fear God, honor the king. Continue reading

Amazing Grace/Churches of Christ in Decline?: Rescuing the Churches of Christ, Part 2

grace2.jpgIX. Church plants have been shown to work.

A. By “church plant” I mean a team of 15 to 20 or so who go to a city and start a church. “Domestic missionary team” may be a more helpful term.

B. The people who run these programs have tried many things, some of which work and some of which fail. But they’ve now found approaches that have an over 80% success rate. Indeed, most plants are self-supporting in 5 years or less — and planting daughter churches.

C. Church plants often convert more people in 3 years than we convert (other than our own children) in 20!

D. What do they do that works, even in communities with few Christians, often where people are very hostile to Christianity? Continue reading

Buried Talents: Additional Material on Eph 5:21 (in response to Alan)

As Eph. 5:23 is often the passage most heavily relied on to establish the hierarchicalist position, this article will challenge the hierarchical interpretation of that passage. We begin somewhat indirectly, however, by first addressing two articles published recently in the Restoration Quarterly, evidently seeking to buttress the hierarchical position by arguing against an egalitarian interpretation of Eph. 5:21. After discussing that key passage, we will turn to the balance of Paul’s discussion of husbands and wives in Eph. 5. Continue reading

Buried Talents: Ephesians 5, Part 2 (“Submission”)

The next key concept that we should consider is submission. Verse 21 states that all Christians are to submit to one another. In the following verses Paul gives examples of this principle in practice, in marriage, between parents and children, and between masters and slaves. The subject in each case is clearly submission to one another.

Paul, having so stated once, does not need to restate the command to submit in each paragraph to make it true. Slaves must submit to masters, but masters must also submit to slaves. For example, in verse 6:9 when Paul commands masters to treat their slaves as the slaves are commanded to treat their masters (“in the same way”), he is explaining how the general command to mutually submit is to be fulfilled by masters toward slaves. Amazing Grace/Churches of Christ in Decline?: Rescuing the Churches of Christ, Part 1

[This is an outline for class teachers at my church. Although some of the material is from other recent posts, most of it’s brand new, especially toward the end. It’s designed for teaching at all churches that have covered the background material on grace.

I’m convinced that the solution to the declining numbers in the Churches of Christ is (a) planting domestic churches and (b) turning our established churches into church plants. Here’s how I plan to teach it.]

grace2.jpgI. Quail Springs Church of Christ

A. Had 900 members a year ago.

B. It declined to 600 members after the elders announced the addition of a second service which would be instrumental.

C. After the local paper, the Daily Oklahoman (statewide circulation) ran a story, two small churches in Oklahoma and Texas ran a full page ad (cost of $12,000 or so) disfellowshipping their pulpit minister, Mark Henderson.

D. A second ad to similar effect was run by some other churches a few weeks later. (About $24,000 spent on embarrassing the church in the media, which will usually gladly do that for free!!)

E. Meanwhile, not a single Oklahoma congregation stood in solidarity with Quail Springs. Some announced that they’d not paid for the ads or even that it was wrong to run the ads, but none stated that they accept Quail Springs in full communion. Continue reading

Are We Sacramentalists? Working Our Way Back to Eden

BaptismI recently posted an article on Ephesians 4 and Paul’s theology of service. Service, for a Christian, is the fulfillment of God’s very purpose in saving us.

(Eph 2:8-10) For it is by grace you have been saved, through faith–and this not from yourselves, it is the gift of God– 9 not by works, so that no one can boast. 10 For we are God’s workmanship, created in Christ Jesus to do good works, which God prepared in advance for us to do.

We were saved, forgiven, regenerated, baptized, and given the Holy Spirit to re-work us so that we’d do good works! Continue reading

Quail Springs Church of Christ “Disfellowshipped”: The Results Are In

quailsprings.gifWhile wandering the labyrinthine staircases of the Pepperdine mountainside, I ran into an elder of the Quail Springs Church of Christ. We had an encouraging chat about the Quail Springs congregation. He’s a good man. Those who speak so harshly of this eldership have obviously never met the men they so vehemently damn!

You’ll recall that Quail Springs, a congregation of 900, lost 300 members when they added a second service, which is an instrumental service. Well, that was January. On Easter, they had 1,350 in attendance! Oh, wow! Continue reading

Pepperdine: The Stairmaster Lectureship

It’s the last day of the Pepperdine lectureships. I thought I’d pass along a few impressions before we get to the many lessons I’ve learned.

First, you may notice that I’ve illustrated this post with the famous Escher woodcut of countless staircases. Well, that’s Pepperdine. You can’t go anywhere without climbing stairs. There are places where they actually make you go down stairs just so they can make you go up stairs! To get from the Fieldhouse (gym) where the keynote speakers speak to the classes, you have to climb over 200 steps!

Fortunately, the provide a shuttle service. But even with the service, it’s steps just to get you where you can climb more steps. On the other hand, I couldn’t help but notice that there are no fat Pepperdine students! They all look to be in pretty good shape. I may have lost a pound or two myself. Continue reading
